Cantor: 'We Are Going to Proceed' With Defunding NPR
CNSNews ^ | March 9, 2011 | Nicholas Ballasy

(CNSNews.com) - When asked today whether he thought the resignation of National Public Radio CEO Vivian Schiller was a good move, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) responded that House Republicans will “proceed” with defunding NPR.

“The statements were that NPR realizes it doesn’t need taxpayer funding. That's what the statement was about," Cantor said at a news availability following a meeting of the House Republican Conference. "So perhaps the truth finally came out and we are going to proceed along those lines because that’s what was said and indicated by that organization.

"As far as individual statements that he made, I think they speak for themselves,” Canter continued, referring to a video posted by conservative activist James O’Keefe yesterday showing NPR’s Ron Schiller, who also resigned, saying NPR does not need federal funding and calling Republicans and tea party members "xenophobic" and "racist.”

It’s past time the GOP House members started living up the promises they made to the American people who voted for them last November. It’s time for Boehner to live up to his promises as well. So far, all we’ve seen are spineless, gutless wimps.

NPR is just one part of what it is. What about the CPB? What about the related functions in the FCC?

Huh? The article’s author or Cantor himself is confused - I can’t figure out which one.

Vivian Schiller != Ron Schiller but both are used in question/reply in a confusing fashion...

“NPR is just one part of what it is. What about the CPB? What about the related functions in the FCC?”

Good questions that bring another one to my mind - if the CPB, for example, remains fully funded, can they transfer some of those dollars back to NPR and PBS by way of stealth?

What you're alluding to should be looked at very carefully.

In fairness to the Republicans they control one arm of the lawmaking process. The house. That’s it. There is only so much they can do. Save your fire for who really needs it — democrats.

I forgot to include the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts), and all sorts of other places — like in the Education Department, the Interior Department, State ... etc. These guys are great at channeling through networks.

Just really have to ask by what Constitutional authority was NPR financed in the first place?? Surely, not the all-enveloping commerce clause??

NPR gets a small fraction of its money directly from FedGov. It gets a much bigger piece indirectly via member stations, who in turn get their money from Corporation for Public Broadcasting. It's CPB that should get de-funded.

Somewhere in Heaven, my father is smiling. I never heard the man say a mean thing against anything or anyone — never. The kindest man I ever knew, but being in radio from live shows in the 20s, through station management and sales from the 50s through the 70s, National Public Radio absolutely the thing that stepped on his sore toe. Said it was totally unfair and without merit. No competition necessary and all the funding in the world to broadcast shows regular broadcasting would go out of business to carry. Yup, he's smiling.

It’s time and if the politicians be it town, state or federal level, beware. If you don’t we the people will rid ourselves of you and your constant game playing.

Sad that nowdays something so simple and common sense could be deemed bold or radical.
