The Huron Chief of Police has been suspended with pay for comments that he made at a recent legislative session. Doug Schmitt was in Pierre to testify is support of a Senate bill.
Doug Schmitt has been with the Huron police for 32 years. For the last ten, he has been the chief.
He recently testified at a legislative session in support of a Senate bill that deals with illegal immigration.
"You see, in Huron we have a very large business," Schmitt said. "It's a packing facility and the employ a great number of workers. Some of which we know to be illegally in this country. There is another facility about twenty minutes from us and they again are a manufacturing facility and we know again that workers inside these walls are in this country illegally."
He went on in his testimony to speak about police investigations in those two companies .
"We have confidential informants that have been inside both facilities for a length of time." Schmitt said. "And they tell us that if you make application there and you don't have any documentation, documentation will be provided for you."
Schmitt also said that he has personally requested ICE for an employment compliance check and got no response.
"The simple fact of the matter is the federal government has lots of regulations and the regulations regarding immigration they are simply ignoring it or the problem has gotten so massive they don't know what to do with it," Schmitt said.
Action News called Schmitt and spoke with him on the phone, but he said he did not wish to do an interview at this time.

My first reaction is to hang the leftists who suspended the Chief unless they reverse the decision.
My second reaction is to hang the leftists anyway.

Or, hang the monied interests who control the people who suspended him. Meatpackers love illegals, and the town of Huron, population 12,000, is well on it’s way to being at least half-Mexican, just in the last 6 or 7 years since two packers opened up there.
Like how the 2nd has become more equal for some, and less equal for others, so too the 1st. Police can now forfeit their ‘privilege’ of freedom of speech.
Someone neglected to tell the chief that telling the truth these days is very dangerous.
