Missed those updates. I’ve had the set on for the last six hours and many of the reports are repeats of earlier events. Things get a little foggy after a while...

Additional information on the Two Nuclear Power Plant Emergencies in Japan.
Five nuclear power plants and several oil refineries shut down automatically after the quake.
Officials say no radiation leaks have been reported.
Hokuriku Electric Co said all three reactors at its Onagawa nuclear plant in northern Japan were shut down.
But Kyodo news reports a fire has broken out in the turbine building of Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi Prefecture.
Its not immediately clear if there is a risk of a radioactive leak as a result of the fire at the plant.
Kyodo also reports that an emergency core-cooling unit had been activated at Fukushima nuclear plant, without giving further details.

Just what I was thinking. Great, another excuse for DoE to refuse to “allow” us to build more nuke plants.

FNS said the reactor had been SCRAMed and that the fire was in a cooling tower.
To: TSgt
Interesting short article below. Apparently a nuclear power emergency is only declared if there is a radiation leak or cooling system failure. So the emergency must have been forced by the cooling system failure. The burning turbine building in the other plant is another issue.

Wow. Prayers everyone. The wind blows this away.

FNC now reporting the cooling mechanism has failed (singular) so I assume the ticker was referring to only one reactor.

A replay of the atmospheric nuclear tests of the 1950s?

Like you say, all we can do now is pray for those affected.

I heard from Japan TV that there was no water available to cool one of the Nuclear Power Plants...
Can they just turn it off?
Even when the plant is shutdown, there is still a lot of heat generated by the decay of the radioactive nastys left over after the uranium atoms have split. This is the heat they have to remove from the core.
I wouldn't worry too much. The news reports tend to exaggerate. Although the plant operators are not having a fun time, they have training and procedures to handle this kind of accident.

My son lives over in Japan in the Chiba area. His wife emailed me and said he’s ok but he’s stuck at work. I’m gonna be watching the boards for the next several days for updates.

Meanwhile MaMa Michelle is finally getting obama calmed down after his traumatic memories of being bullied.
He should be calmed down enough later in the day to speak on the disaster in Japan.
