Crescent City, Calif. (AP) -- A tsunami swept at least five people watching the waves out to sea Friday and ripped docks out of harbors in California, spreading the destruction of a devastating Japanese earthquake to the shores of the United States.
Four people were rescued from the water in Oregon, but one man who was taking photos in Northern California was still missing Friday afternoon. Coast Guard helicopters searched for him near the mouth of the Klamath River in Del Norte County, Calif., after his two friends made it back to shore.

Ditto...even if the tsunami was moving at a speed of 500 mph (by some accounts), the U.S. west coast had hours to prepare. Hanging out on the docks in one of the most vulnerable locations (Crescent City, CA) is beyond dumb.
Sounds like a Darwin Award winner to me.

Yep. I was driving to work this morning listening to the radio DJ implore people to avoid the beaches while passing cars with surfboards sticking out of their trunks heading due west. The savanahs of Africa 200,000 B.C.: "Look out! It's a giant lion!" Others answer: "Where, where, I want to see it!"

The same thing happens around here with hurricane parties. The way I figure, it’s the only rock solid evidence I’ve personally seen in favor of Darwin.

There were people all over the piers and docks with cameras taking pics this morning...lol..
At one point there were a dozen news crews and 6 news choppers following a boat that was drifting around...
It was rather humorous.

My son, who lives in San Clemente, just called and told us a funny story. His father-in-law, who is visiting, woke the family at 4 this morning to tell them they had to leave because there was a tsunami on the way. Mike told him that it was ok because they are more than 200 ft. above sea level. They’re also about 3 miles from the ocean.

I saw two videos on My Face. Posted from Crescent City people. They are on You tube somewhere. Awesome shots of a complete surge into the harbor and then ripping back out and then back in again.

Just read on another site from a couple of people on the SW OR coast - one near Brookings, one in Crescent City - the local news said a surge coming in right now, bigger than the previous one or ones. Brookings and CC harbors destroyed.

I saw two videos on My Face. Posted from Crescent City people. Hi Fish Hawk. I remember hearing of Crescent City people who went to Endert's Beach in 1964, when we had the big tsunami roll in- they wanted to see it. I recall that some of them didn't make it out. Heard about it when I lived not too far from there in Gasquet.
There must be something in the water there. :-)
Will look for the videos on Youtube.

Does anyone know how Misawa AFB might have done up north? They are not far from the coast and was wondering is all. Thanks to anyone with information.
