Why Gingrich Can't Win
Townhall.com ^ | March 13, 2011 | Steve Chapman

Newt Gingrich has a lot going for him if he decides to run for president -- a famous name, a record of accomplishment, a knack for raising money and a rhetorical flair that appeals to his party's conservative base. It's almost enough to make you forget his central handicap, which is that he is Newt Gingrich.

Succeed Barack Obama in the White House? Given his latest news making, he has a better chance of replacing Charlie Sheen in "Two and a Half Men."

The chief problem is not that Gingrich has been through two divorces and is married to a woman with whom he was having an affair while married to his second wife. Last week, he did himself no good by attributing his lapses to excessive work and patriotism. But Americans don't care that much about sexual probity in politicians.

They elected Bill Clinton after Gennifer Flowers came forward to say she had an affair with him. Following his impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he left office with the highest approval rating of any outgoing president going back to Dwight Eisenhower.

No, Gingrich suffers from a worse flaw: He is a demagogue, and demagogues don't get elected president of the United States. They get TV attention, they sometimes get big crowds, they even win the occasional primary. But their only essential function is to fail.

Not that I have any plans to vote for News, but why do you call him a RINO? It seams to me the word is thrown out much to easily

Obama told us a lot, but one thing it screamed loud and clear was “no more old white guys”.

He Lied (as usual)

Plus, Newt's almost 70 and has no real executive experience. Yes, Reagan was older, but Reagan was Reagan and had LOTs of executive experience.

When we put forward elderly legislators, like Bob Dole or McCain, we lose.

He can’t win because he’s a sellout and a pantywaist. The republican electorate is not what it was (I hope).

As far as I know, no one who has been only a U.S Representative has ever been elected President.

Add to that fact the image below.

I always wondered about Newt ,what it was that made me leery of him, and now I know the label for it.......As proof, all one has to do is see him walk into CPAC like he was a prizefighter, to the tune of "Eye of the Tiger"

Everyone else comes out on the stage, not Newt, he comes in through the audience shaking hands to that tune.......didn't sit with me too well........He seems to have a view of himself as REALLY IMPORTANT

Last week I got a phone call from Newt's "exploratory committee" asking what I thought of a Newt run. I told the caller, "he can't win, he has too much baggage and a faulty idea that he is a rock star. No, I don't think he'll run.

I would like to see a Paul Ryan or Jim DeMint run.

How about because Newt is a fat philandering tub of crap!

The man is delusional to think he has a chance. He should write books and give speeches.

Around here we called her Dede Skeefooza. She was just a democRAT who couldn’t get elected in a republican district.

I would vote for Newt. I think he speaks well, can tear up a lib in a debate. He’s taken a lot of arrows from the left and come out fighting.

The first comment I see under the article nails it for me. Obama is a worse demagogue than Newt, but Newt has far more experience. He speaks well. It’s Newt’s kissing up to Nancy, especially over climate change, gives me agita.

I see Newt as basically a dishonest person, which would bother me, but doesn’t disqualify him from the presidency for me. I don’t demand my president to be honest. Honesty, IMHO, is important for people who don’t pay attention to politics, which is why Obama’s base doesn’t understand what a friccin’ liar he is. I expect POTUS to be capable and understand what this country stands for. This brings me back to the climate problem.

Newt has one thing I like. He thinks outside the box, and has ideas.

The reason Newt can’t win is that he is a RINO

Yep - if he was a true Conservative, he would be hard to beat because he really is smart. I met Haley Barbour at a Promise Keepers convention a few years back - engaging, Christian, and probably smarter than any of the Repub possibles. Right now I'd like to see him or Palin and possibly a joint ticket if someone can figure out the dynamics for it to fly.

I remember Newt declaring that he had the utmost respect for Hillary Clinton and that she was doing a good job as SofS. That is an eliminator right there. Did he respect the 500 FBI files she had her goon squad collect, or did he respect her trashing of Flowers, the White House assistant (forgot name), or when she arranged to have the whole village of Orthodox Jews stuff the ballot box for a payoff later. Newt needs to go away.

Once Newt led the pubbie takover of Congress he allowed them to spend MY money like it was sea water.
Then he cozied up to Nancy and Hillary and tried to make nice with the vermin scum of the democrat party that also want to “TAKE MY MONEY” to use as they see fit.
These big spending turds can ALL kiss my rear end.
NO to RINO crap.

and demagogues don’t get elected president of the United States.

Unless they’re thin, tall, half black, and, as Senator Reid says, capable of skillfully adopting a “Negro dialect” when consiously choosing to do so.

Right.

He resigned from his House speaker-ship. Then, he basically walked away from his House seat. He hasn't been elected to anything since then.

If the GOP were stupid enough [Party of Stupid?] to nominate him, he wouldn't get as many Electoral votes as McCain. The MSM would parade his trainload of baggage incessantly. The MSM would love to delve into his ethics violations, etc.

He seems to have a view of himself as REALLY IMPORTANT

The thing that goads me about him is during his various commentaries. He says 'WE do this, we passed this, we were against this, we will do such, we, we, we ...

He acts like he is some big official in the GOP. Last position I remember him being elected to was in the late 1990s.

He will lose a massive amount of the female vote just by the opposition constantly reminding the public he told his first wife he was divorcing her as she lay in a hospital after cancer surgery

He will be branded as a cold heartless bastard

It may not be politically rational, but there it is

Here is the definition of demagogue from the Merriam-Webster dictionary online

“a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power”

That describes most democrats.

At about the same time as clintoon was hitting on Lewinsky and after it became public, Newt was still plumbing the hired help.
