Newly emerged footage shows the force at which the tsunami struck Japan's coast.
In the fishing port of Miyako, in Iwate prefecture, boats were overturned, while video from Kamaishi city shows cars being dragged down city streets by the water.
The tsunami that followed the 8.9-magnitude earthquake wreaked havoc along a huge stretch of Japan's north-east coast, sweeping far inland and devastating a number of towns and villages. Powerful aftershocks are continuing to hit the region.

unreal.
I haven’t had the heart to watch too many videos of this event, but I have to say that this video is hands down the most impressive one I’ve seen. Just amazing.
The Japanese must like white cars. Seems to be the dominant color by far.
It’s like the bathtub.
In all the videos I’ve seen I notice that you see very few people or moving cars in the path unlike the Indian Ocean Tsunami. I pray that most people were able to get to higher ground.
My best friends Japanese wife has an aunt living in Sendai. They have not heard any news, and fear the worse.
White is overwhelmingly the color Japanese choose. They’re very conformist in many ways, and the color of cars is one of them. This has been true for a long time. My junior high school track coach spent time there in the early seventies and showed us videos of Tokyo he’d taken. I recall him pointing out what he termed a “Japanese Mustang” which was a Nissan Skyline. White, as were all the cars on the streets.
Oh my word. Its horrible. The cars on the bridge driving by and the small glimpse of people running down the sidewalk. Just Wow.
what are they going to do with all the wrecked cars?
Prayers going up for the Japanese relatives, but you are right—with this triple threat hitting Japan all at the same time, chances aren’t that great, but God can work miracles in the most hopeless of times and places!!
The talk of 10,000 dead seems wildly optimistic when you see the pictures and video
Previously, when I thought about a tsunami “wave,” I always thought it was like a normal wave. It would wash in, then flow back out. This video shows that it really is an enormous uplifting the entire ocean for a long while, totally swamping the sea walls. It just doesn’t ebb and flow back out — the entire ocean level goes up for a long time. This is definitely the most impressive video. I would have been terrified on that balcony thinking this is my last moment on earth. But, if you are totally helpless there, there’s nothing better to do than grab the video camera.
I haven’t heard that there was much warning at all.
“what are they going to do with all the wrecked cars?”
Cash for crunkers? Just sayin.
The way Japan is so connected and everyone has a lot of technology, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing hundreds of videos like this in the weeks to come. It will be a gold mine for engineers in dealing with future events.
The earthquake happened at 2:46pm..
Does anyone know how many minutes after the quake for the tsunami to hit as shown in these videos?
If you look on the left side of the image around the 35 second mark, you can see vehicles and what may be people (hard to tell) trying to get away. Unlikely they survived. What a shame.
I used Google Maps street view to "drive" around pre-tsunami Sendai. What struck me was how nice all the cars were. I did not see any "beaters" at all.
