A panel of state lawmakers today is expected to consider reducing the scope of the sanctuary city bill, a piece of immigration-related legislation that Gov. Rick Perry has said should be a priority.
Led by state Rep. Rene Oliveira, D-Brownsville , Democrats on the House State Affairs Committee are trying to remove references to school districts in the bill. He said there could be legal and financial problems for school districts if they get involved in immigration issues.
"This bill is supposed to be about sanctuary cities, not sanctuary schools," Oliveira said.
His amendment would allow school districts to keep their policies in place written or not that say they won't ask about immigration status.
Oliveira is seeking to attach the amendment to the so-called sanctuary cities bill by Rep. Burt Solomons, R-Carrollton . The bill would forbid governmental entities including cities, counties and school districts from adopting policies that prohibit law enforcement agencies from enforcing federal immigration laws.
The bill says the state could withhold grants and other funding if those governmental entities refuse to comply.

Why can’t they ask?! Illegals should NOT be in our schools.
Why cant they ask?! Illegals should NOT be in our schools.
Because Democrats do not have any allegiance to this State or Country, they are ambassadors of the underworld. One would think that being billions of dollars in the hole, that the Demoncats would not make educating children of a neighboring narco-state a priority. Yet with the unconstitutional Robin Hood policy still in place, they are only spending your money, so it doesn't matter.
Can’t have this.
It would make life more difficult for UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRATS.
This is about money for the school districts, pure and simple. I have been involved in the Texas schools directly for a great portion of the past 20 years, either directly as a teacher or indirectly as a parent, and I can tell you they don’t ask because they want the dollars that come with each student in school from the state.
With 56% of the state’s budget being education dollars, if they’re looking for a way to balance the budget this year, this particular bill would do just that. Stop paying for the illegal students, and we save a ton of money!
Seems like Texas is also filled with open-border RINOs who will drive the state to becoming another California.
Amen.
Actually, the sad fact is the SCOTUS ruled in Plyler vs. Doe (1982) that public schools cannot exclude illegal invaders' children.
ILLEGALS infesting our schools is a major budgetary and performance problem. Why should we be spending thousands per year to educate people who shouldn’t be here to begin with ? Why should we tolerate the discipline problems posed by these students ? Why should we put up with “English as a second language”, etc., Spanish language translators for the parents, all of the extra costs the illegals bring ?
To keep the ‘Rat “education” unions happy, that’s why.
You are right about Plyler, but that doesn’t prevent asking and reporting, which would discourage the illegals from sending their children. In fact, it would be another factor encouraging them to go back to wonderful Mexico, San Salvador, etc.
Ok, then find out if the kids are illegal and turn in the PARENTS. Remove the parents and I bet the kids will not show up for school. I had to show a BC to get into school, play little league, join the swim team, etc. If the kid is an anchor baby, well we have to get mom and dad some other way, but just to show up for school and demand to go should be illegal.
Less students = less federal funding
Less federal funding = less money to teacher unions
Less money to teacher unions = less union money to the Democrat Party.
Less union money to the Democrat Party = opposition to bill.
He said there could be legal and financial problems for school districts if they get involved in immigration issues.
There already is financial problems for school districts across America
The American public is quickly running out of “give a damn”.
We want our country back.
