Why is there no looting in Japan?
Telegraph ^ | March 14, 2011

Posted on 03/14/2011 7:30:40 AM PDT by NCjim

The landscape of parts of Japan looks like the aftermath of World War Two; no industrialised country since then has suffered such a death toll. The one tiny, tiny consolation is the extent to which it shows how humanity can rally round in times of adversity, with heroic British rescue teams joining colleagues from the US and elsewhere to fly out.

And solidarity seems especially strong in Japan itself. Perhaps even more impressive than Japan’s technological power is its social strength, with supermarkets cutting prices and vending machine owners giving out free drinks as people work together to survive. Most noticeably of all, there has been no looting, and I’m not the only one curious about this.

This is quite unusual among human cultures, and it’s unlikely it would be the case in Britain. During the 2007 floods in the West Country abandoned cars were broken into and free packs of bottled water were stolen. There was looting in Chile after the earthquake last year – so much so that troops were sent in; in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina saw looting on a shocking scale.

Why do some cultures react to disaster by reverting to everyone for himself, but others – especially the Japanese – display altruism even in adversity?

"Nanking got all of their looting out of their system."

In South Korea, there are stretches of *forest* where the trees are all planted in nice neat rows. During their occupation of the peninsula, the Japanese had removed vast swaths of lumber for their military/industrial efforts, leaving much of the landscape denuded. This was still pretty much the case in 1950, so you'll see very little woodland in pictures from the Korean war. Much of the forested areas of the ROK have been planted since 1953.

You forgot to add the waters of the tsunami flooding and destroying anything electronic. A lot of factors.

Your right, diversity, divides. That’s what it’s meant to do, turn neighbor against neighbor by breaking down any sense of community and creating an every man for himself atmosphere, better known as, “CHAOS”.

'Perhaps davisfh should have said "multitribalism." '

Thanks. I stand corrected, and you are right. The problem is actually "multitribal," the worst of all maladies.

Its not race that makes the difference. Its the character of the people, of individuals, that make the difference.

I know some fine, upstanding black people.

Its the culture or the discipline of the people that makes the difference.

I have relatives, lilly white, that are welfare rats and trailer trash.

If that is not tribal I don't know what is.

I believe the second half of your statement is true.

I lived in the Middle East where tribalism was rampant. It was not about race. It was more like rival gangs of the same race.

True for the most part but explaining the “Bell Curve” using only culture might be difficult.

I don't see why. Can you elaborate a bit why you think so?

Chile isn't particularly diverse. Neither is Haiti.

They are if you look beyond the color of skin. And there's a big difference between Japan and Haiti. Compare the economies of Japan and Haiti and get back to me.

It might be totally explainable.
I’m betting the “Bell Curve” study, if based strictly on culture, would provide nearly identical results.

An additional, interesting study would be to test non-typical people of a different “race” than the norm for the given culture and see how they faired on the curve.

You wouldn’t find many “whites” who were of the Asian culture to study, but you could find enough “white/black” crossovers to study.

By that definition, not one I accept, BTW, Japan is also almost entirely diverse.

Their civilization, while considerably influenced by Western Civ, is still at root non-Western.

I understand your point, of course. When they say diverse, they don’t really mean diverse, they mean non-Western, non-white. Just another example of the bastardization of language in the defense of an indefensible ideology.

Interesting.

As of late, tribalism, limits the powers of a country. The flip side, unity of 'race' creates a dangerous path, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany.

It will be interesting, how China fares in the future, though they have many different factions and sub-cultures within it.

Based on the reports I’ve seen there isn’t a whole lot left to loot anyway.

Time to take a deep breath and get real... there wasn't that much to 'loot' in New Orleans either.

It's not the 'stuff' that matters - the the character and cultural values of the people...

Well bully for you so maybe you should take your Marxist meme and head on down to NO, or Memphis or Detroit or Watts or E St Louis or even Cleveland TX and expound to the tribes there how race has nothing to do with it.

They don’t have to worry about quotas when hiring, now do they. They can actually base their decision on who they feel is more qualified to build the product.
