The rapid growth of smartphones and electronic tablets is making the internet favourite for people seeking news, a report released today said.

News consumption online increased 17 per cent last year from the year before, the project said in its eighth annual State of the News Media survey.

Meanwhile, US local, network and cable television news, newspapers, radio and magazines all lost audience last year, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism, a research organisation that evaluates and studies the performance of the press. The rapid growth of electronic tablets, such as the iPad, is one of the reasons news consumption online increased 17 per cent last year from the year before

The rapid growth of electronic tablets, such as the iPad, is one of the reasons news consumption online increased 17 per cent last year from the year before

The percentage of people who say they get news online at least three times a week surpassed newspapers for the first time. It was second only to local TV news as the most popular news platform and seems poised to pass that medium, too, project director Tom Rosenstiel said.

Local TV news has been the most popular format since the 1960s, when its growth was largely responsible for the death of afternoon newspapers, he said.

'It was a milestone year,' he said.

People are just becoming accustomed to having the internet available in their pockets on phones or small tablets, he said.

In December, 41 per cent of Americans said they got most of their news about national and international issues on the internet, more than double the 17 per cent who said that a year earlier, the report said.

"Thank you Jim."

Amen to that!

I actually read my 1st newspaper today, well not actually read, flipped through it, first time in probably 7-9 years.

I wake up 1 hour each morning to have my coffee and read my "online newspaper....FR". I had 1/2 hour today, the Daily News was on the table (the newspaper I grew up with until we moved to LI, then switched to Newsday).

I flipped through and wound up reading the comics, lol. I wanted to see which one's were still there. I spent most of my time reading those.......and the obits.

It felt very odd "flipping" through pages that rendered my fingers black.

Besides, you can't get the full story, or at least most of the story without reading 3-8 articles.....which FR provides with so many FReeper links.

Thank the good Lord for FR!!!

Well info can be massaged. It takes several different takes to get the real meaning. Then you have to use your logic to figure it out. Dog and Pony shows become apparent over time with an open mind.

They come in handy in the new waiting lines. You can do the crosswords and read the comics. The rest is a waste. If you are painting inside or need any kind of cover for a project they work good. Also if you fish or hunt they are handy wrappers. As far as the AP news ,,....well you get the picture.

I find newspapers useful, as many do around here, but only because we all burn wood to heat our houses.

additionally, as print journalism goes into oblivion, PRINTED RECORD of history also disappears. The editors have rewritten and entirely deleated hit pieces of journalism (without apology or acknowledgment) and without a written transcript, their dirty work will go unreported.

My wife brings home old papers from her office. We use them for campfires and occasionally wrapping Dungeness crab.

Oh, and I also used them to insulate our chicken house. ;>)
