Indian Navy nabs 61 Somali pirates after gun-battle in Arabian Sea
THE DECCAN HERALD ^

After a gun-battle in the high seas, the Indian Navy has apprehended a pirate mother ship rescuing 13 crew members and arrested 61 Somali sea brigands about 600 nautical miles off the western coast in the Arabian Sea.

"At 2100 hours on March 12, INS Kalpeni intercepted a pirate mother vessel called Vega 5 in the Arabian Sea about 600 nautical miles west of India. 13 crew members were rescued and 61 pirates were nabbed," Navy spokesperson Commander P V Satish said here today.

The operation had started on Friday when a naval Dornier aircraft located Vega 5 while responding to a call from a merchant ship MV Vancouver Bridge in the area and foiled the piracy attempt, he said.

"Seeing the naval aircraft, the pirates immediately aborted their piracy attempt and the mother vessel attempted to escape from the area. Simultaneously, INS Khukri and Kalpeni were diverted to intercept and investigate," the spokesperson said.

After INS Kalpeni closed in on Vega 5, the pirate vessel launched two skiffs attacking the Indian Navy ship with fire arms, he said.

"INS Kalpeni responded with limited firing and, thereafter, it was observed that a fire had broken out on Vega 5 and its personnel were seen jumping overboard," he said. Later on, INS Kalpeni in conjunction with INS Khukri found 74 personnel comprising 61 pirates and 13 crew members of the fishing vessel.

Sixty one survived? Maybe they should have sent in the Indian Marines.

The pirates tried to attack a warship with small arms on skiffs? They are dumber than I thought.

Then there was that part about the unexplained fire breaking out on the Vega 5. Hmmm...I wonder how that happened? Maybe the warship’s crew might shed some light on that.

Hmmm. 61 pirates? Let me do the math...

Three Gurkhas with their knives would do it. I know, overkill, but why not?

Sancho, thanks for the post. It's good to see that we are not alone in the abject worthlessness of our reporters!

This story leaves more questions than answers. How many casualties? Is the mother ship sunk? What now becomes of the captured pirates?

I take it the only reason we are not wiping out the pirates is that they hold some 600+ hostages? Or they are all related to the Obama-Odinga Clan? Need info. WTF? Over.

“They were released in an inflatable boat without navigational equipment.

Within an hour, contact was lost with the boat’s radio beacon, the defence source said.

“It seems that they all died,” the unnamed source was quoted as saying by Russia’s Interfax news agency. “

Nepalese. They were British mercenary troops recruited in Nepal. In 1947 when India became independent four of the ten existing Gurkha regiments were transferred to the British and six regiments went to the Indian Army. The Indian Army still has "Gorkha" (India's spelling) troops.

From the article:

In the gun-battle, Vega-5 caught fire possibly because one of the bullets hit the additional fuel drums that pirates generally carry to fuel the skiffs while fleeing from the scene. Some jumped overboard after which two naval ships captured 74 personnel comprising 61 pirates and 13 members of the original crew of the fishing vessel.

The successful operation almost coincided with the government’s decision to change anti-piracy policies providing the Navy with a much more pro-active role.

Ah, Gurkhas are from Nepal and not India. Do not mess with Gurkhas or they will serve you your head on a plate.

I guarantee this: let the Gurkhas take care of the Somali pirates and you'll save a LOT of money, time, and effort.
