You Can STOP WORRYING ABOUT A RADIATION DISASTER IN JAPAN -- Here's Why
Business Insider ^ | March 13, 2011 | Dr. Josef Oehmen,

Posted on 03/14/2011 7:11:48 PM PDT by TennTuxedo

This was originally posted as a comment on Japan Death Toll Climbs Astronomically As Nuclear Crisis Spreads.

UPDATE: We have learned that this was written by Dr. Josef Oehmen, a research scientist at MIT. It was originally posted here.

I repeat, there was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity from the damaged Japanese reactors.

By "significant" I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on - say - a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

I have been reading every news release on the incident since the earthquake. There has not been one single report that was accurate and free of errors (and part of that problem is also a weakness in the Japanese crisis communication). By “not free of errors” I do not refer to tendentious anti-nuclear journalism – that is quite normal these days. By “not free of errors” I mean blatant errors regarding physics and natural law, as well as gross misinterpretation of facts, due to an obvious lack of fundamental and basic understanding of the way nuclear reactors are build and operated. I have read a 3 page report on CNN where every single paragraph contained an error.

We will have to cover some fundamentals, before we get into what is going on.

Wow, what an intelligent response...

I asked a legitimate question.

BTW, Japan’s PM says reactor #4 is now on fire... No big deal right...

News flash: A fourth reactor is on fire, reactor number 2 is probably melting down, the Prime Minister was just on TV try to tell people not to panic. I’d say the SHHTF!

“it is almost time to panic”

I’ll take “Japan is Screwed” for $500 Alex.

Who ever wrote that article is a clown.

For some balance, read this:

Then decide whether or not you should buy potassium iodide for your family, or if you should stop drinking milk until the Japan nuclear crisis subsides.

It wouldn’t hurt to stock up on food, bottled water, beverages, and potassium iodide tablets.

such an inherently dangerous design

Boiling Water Reactors were commercialized by General Electric and licensed to several other manufacturers (Toshiba and Hitachi for example). Feedwater is run through the core and the steam produced is used to turn the turbine. This layout is considerably easier to control than the PWR you tried to describe in your post. There are over 30 BWRs in the United States.

About as intelligent as arguing that California’s wine crop is in danger.

Please continue fanning the flames of panic!

Keep buying into the media-driven hysteria. Soon enough more people will act the same and pull the plug on nuclear energy.

Whatever the hell for? So you can follow the herd and feel foolish later?

There’s zero risk in America and zero need for KI tablets.

That’s the scary one

All light-water-reactor fuel forms Pu — it is an expected product of irradiating the non-fissile Uranium. Typical fuel creates Pu. MOX (a mix of uranium-dioxide and Pu-oxide) starts off with a non-zero amount of Pu. It is normal to burn Pu in a light-water-reactor.

Hey genius, my point wasn’t that it would be contaminated to unsafe levels, it is the perception of those who buy the wine that matters...

While I “fan the flames of panic” you can continue to stick your head in the sand...

Supposedly there’s a substantial amount of Plutonium in reactor #3, is that not true? They were using it to recycle nuclear weapons so the claim is.

“Keep buying into the media-driven hysteria. Soon enough more people will act the same and pull the plug on nuclear energy.”

Lets hope so. No more Nukes. We need to build natural gas and coal fired power plants. This is America lets use what we have. It never melts down and kills everyone.

Thanks for clarifying.

I knew I shouldn't have let my subscription to Popular Nukes expire.

It never melts down and kills everyone.

Nor does nuclear power suffer natural gas explosions or coal mine disasters.

If your interest is solely accidental loss of life per KwH generated, nuclear is by far the safest means of generating electricity.

Don't go all hysterical on us...
