You Can STOP WORRYING ABOUT A RADIATION DISASTER IN JAPAN -- Here's Why
Business Insider ^ | March 13, 2011 | Dr. Josef Oehmen,

Posted on 03/14/2011 7:11:48 PM PDT by TennTuxedo

This was originally posted as a comment on Japan Death Toll Climbs Astronomically As Nuclear Crisis Spreads.

UPDATE: We have learned that this was written by Dr. Josef Oehmen, a research scientist at MIT. It was originally posted here.

I repeat, there was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity from the damaged Japanese reactors.

By "significant" I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on - say - a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

I have been reading every news release on the incident since the earthquake. There has not been one single report that was accurate and free of errors (and part of that problem is also a weakness in the Japanese crisis communication). By “not free of errors” I do not refer to tendentious anti-nuclear journalism – that is quite normal these days. By “not free of errors” I mean blatant errors regarding physics and natural law, as well as gross misinterpretation of facts, due to an obvious lack of fundamental and basic understanding of the way nuclear reactors are build and operated. I have read a 3 page report on CNN where every single paragraph contained an error.

We will have to cover some fundamentals, before we get into what is going on.

I for one don’t give a crap about the communist state of California. Or their wine... If they dropped into the sea it would be sad, but it would be better for the rest of America.

Dude...

Great point. It is truly amazing that we spend as a society such enormous amounts of energy being concerned about radiation, earthquake levels, when in reality the real risk to humanity was the water. Respect water, especially when combined with gravity and or force.

Congress should immediately censure water, order it to obey, and we should find alternatives to water. That would keep our own kids safe.

Lets hope so. No more Nukes. We need to build natural gas and coal fired power plants.

Coal plants release more radiation than nuke plants. There is radioactive material in coal that simply gets released into the atmosphere as it is burned.

Earthquake plus tsunami: Thousands dead.

Damaged nuke plant: 0 dead

And people act like the nuke plant is going to kill us all. Go figure.

That would suggest everything is safely shut down at this point.

Yeah, that confirms what I’m seeing. Seems like they’ve got this mostly under control. Everything’s under cold shutdown so it will take a couple days to cool off. Everything is subcritical, so we won’t see a nuclear excursion.

I suspect that this is a form of entertainment for these people. They like believing the world is coming to an end.

Yep. Planes crash, but I still fly. Over 40,000 americans are killed, and countless more severely injured, every single year on our highways, but I still drive.

How many have been killed by nuclear power?

If the containment vessel is cracked or damaged, there will
be a meltdown because coolant water will leak out and not
cover the fuel rods.

The damage will be economic and another victim of the tsunami. They have a substantial reconstruction project before they can even consider bringing the undamaged units back online. The tsunami destruction to the oil storage and port facilities at the plant was shocking.

I thought there was an interactive nuclear power plant game on the web, and I found it. Your comments reminded me of it.

How many have been killed by nuclear power?

I think maybe these three are the only reported cases:

Well sure, without a doubt reconstruction will take time.

A Navy nuclear engineer supports much of the initial article's premise.

I think from this point forward the efforts will spent on preventing any more damage to the facility. According to the TEPCO updates, they have external power back up at the plant.

Waste of a good kelp capsule, if you’re taking it for the iodine in it, afraid of radionuclides from Japan.

I’m in GA, too, and my bottle of KI is still sealed up in the basement closet.

This is America lets use what we have. It never melts down and kills everyone.

Who's supposed to be impressed with this 'kills everyone' hyperbole which couldn't be farther from the truth? Wannabe Chicken Littles?

Maybe you shouldn't say that on FREE REPUBLIC, which, along with some of its largest donors, would be under the sea in your kindly scenario.
