Time to stop nuke hysteria. Media obsessing over reactors that will probably not kill anyone.

"There an article on FR about people ordering Iodine Tablets like crazy. I wonder if we should buy some too."

Look at is this way: it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Peace of mind does wonders for one's calm.

"I want to give him the benefit of the doubt."

Well, fine, but the numbers he was quoting WERE spouted ad nauseum by the press in the months after the accident.

The actual figures are not covered by the press (non-sensational), and required one to pay attention. Not all FReepers do, so one must take your assertion on faith.

There have been some fatalities, apparently. Plant workers. Probably due to explosions, not radiation leakage.

The press aren't worried about the thousands dead and still missing, they're not concerned for the 325,000 now homeless and facing freezing temperatures in Northeast Japan this week, the lack of food and potable water, they're not worried about the disease that inevitably follows massive flooding, they're not worked about the chemical pollution from all the debris and refinery fires.

They're only concerned with causing a worldwide PANIC and destroying the nuclear power industry.

Thousands of Japanese have been told to shelter in place. Whether or not this Radiation causes problems for the west coast, we have at least 2 Nuclear Reactors right on the Pacific Coastline.

You think it's contagious and will cause San Onofre and Diablo Canyon 5,000 miles away in CA to melt down? Got it.

Edison: San Onofre could handle 7.0 quake

It may very well not be “all well,” but no one says it is. Some are trying to provide perspective. Those on site know damn well it’s not “all well” but it’s not necessarily the end, either.

Perspective is quite important in any situation.

Nice try but bad analogy. :-)

No one is denying anything or being pollyannish. If old Baghdad Bob had been truthful, he’d have said “US troops are outside the city, and they will enter, but they are not going to kill us all.”

Likewise, the earthquake and tsunami and core melts are really, really serious, but do fall just a bit short of “the end is nigh.”

But yeah, there is lots of work to do. Having perspective along the way helps.

Mankind will survive, and the industry will have learned oodles from these incidents. Nuclear is the way to go.

——This scaremongering over the crippled Fukushima nuclear complex is extraordinary.——

The aging leftwing anti nuc types know that their cause is lost. Obama is quietly allowing nuc power construction. Even their head guy at Greenpeace has capitulated.

They are now puling out all the stops to strike intense and paralyzing fear into the population.

Every leftist, you mother or father or brother or aunt or cousin is our enemy. They will be duped again.
