Justice Dept cites New Orleans police for rights violations

(Reuters) - The New Orleans Police Department too often uses excessive force, conducts illegal stops and arrests, and has a pattern of discriminating on the basis of race, gender and sexual orientation, the Department of Justice said in a report on Thursday.

"For too long, the Department has been largely indifferent to widespread violations of law and policy by its officers," according to the report by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

The report outlined problems with training, recruiting, supervision and interrogation practices.

DOJ said that the police department encourages under-investigating violence against women. It also found that officers used unjustified deadly and non-deadly force - including significant force against people with mental illness in cases in which it appeared no force was necessary.

"Instances of clearly unjustified force are routinely approved by supervisors and ratified up the chain of command, resulting in no accountability," the report said. "Officers even encourage each other to use force as retaliation."

Right...

And the fact that Federal Prosecutors have charged over 20 officers in four separate cases stemming from Katrina alone has no bearing on anything...

Let me guess, it’s an all Black area of the city, and the cops are arresting too high a percentage of Blacks.

Where’s that ‘Aw hell, not this —— again!” graphic?

This is like the Iran/Iraq war. I really wish the DOJ and the NOLA PD could be destroyed over this. It’s s pity they both can’t lose.

These are the same class acts who stole Cadillacs from New Orleans dealers after Katrina. And naturally from REUTERS, there is no mention of the fact these cops beat up law abiding people and confiscated their guns after the Hurricane. It’s FAR more important that crimes against women are not treated seriously enough!!!! Incredible.

Anyone who knows anything about New Orleans will tell you one race has a habit of disproportionately committing far more crime than any other—specifically violent crime. I wonder if that fits into the equation when they’re talking about “discriminating” justice.

Not a word about slamming little old ladies around while stealing legally owned guns after Katrina.

NO doesn't have a high quality labor pool to draw applicants from, it is a cesspool!

Uh, will they prosecute the BLACK officers who arrest BLACK criminals? I imagine that Black officers make up a LARGE proportion of the force.

As I read, I think of the Dayton experiment to reduce the testing scores for black applicants for the police to “D” or “F”. Our public servants in NO passed at least with a “C” or better.
