Entirely appropriate course of action.

LOL! Sure, we'll spend a couple million and have a bunch of inspectors crawling over nuke plants for the next two years. They will conclude that the plants are up to spec for the design they were intended for. We already have a dozen government agencies that signed off on the original designs. The problem is when you get a plant designed to handle a 8.7 earthquake and 5 meter tsunami hit with a 9.1 earthquake and a 10 meter tsunami. This is pure political theater.

You mean that his brilliant administration has not been doing this on a regular basis? Oh, that’s right; the inspectors are probably union so the inspections are pencil-whipped.

How much you wanna bet that Obama lackeys at the NRC will find problems at reactors only in swing states - so he can appeal to their irrational fears.

Iran’s nuke facilitates are perfectly safe and only for peaceful purposes. No need to worry. Right?

Gad, another industry that will be bogged down in the court system for years. As if it hadn’t been stopped cold over the last decades anyway.

Yeah, good thing your government was there to come in and save the day.

In complex, risky endeavors, shit happens, even with the best, most conscientious of engineering oversight.

Government inspectors are wholly unnecessary.

"President Barack Obama is calling for a comprehensive safety review at the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S. in the wake of the Japanese disaster."

What is this; about the millionth anal exam of the nuclear power industry by the enviro-nazi kooks in the federal government?

"... They will conclude that the plants are up to spec for the design they were intended for."

Maybe the inspectors will find something wrong with the spec.

You know, like:

Inspector: "What's your backup plan in case these diesel generators that pump coolant go offline because of some unforseen calamity?"

Nuclear Plant Manager: "Uh, nothing really. Maybe go down to Home Depot and bring back a whole crapload of Honda generators, I guess? I don't know. Maybe it's in the spec? I'll have my guys check on that for you, Mr. Inspector..."

That's basically what happened at Fukushima. The plant didn't fail: The diesel generators did.

It never occurred to anybody to check and see if these things were safe until Japan had both a 9.0, once-in-a-1000-years earthquake and a massive tsunami at the same time which may, or may not, result in someone getting too much radiation from the damaged reactors.

“Entirely appropriate course of action”

IF he were an objective, rational human being!

However!
Since he’s agenda driven, you will find he will use the results (no matter their content), to justify halting further development, and likely shutting down existing facilities.
This is the anti-American, anti-captialist, anti-industry, population control, President we’re talking about!

"He does understand that the damage was not caused by the earthquake, right? It was the wave that knocked out the power, destroyed generators, etc.

We already know exactly what magnitude earthquake each plant is designed for, and we already have predictions for how large an earthquake we can expect in each region. The ‘study’ would take around 15 minutes....unless this is all just a cynical attempt to halt nuke power in this country :)"

Bingo. The goal of the left - no nukes, strangle oil, gas and coal. Obama's stated goal to cause electricity to skyrocket. Never let a crisis go to waste.

Safety reviews are already done by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

This is an attempt to give a few more cushy jobs to Obama cronies and then, no matter what the findings, shut down the plants.

In their eyes, the only people who need or deserve gas, food, electricity, and other “conveniences, are the leftists in power. The rest can either toil for their pleasure or die.

“Entirely appropriate course of action.”

Agreed.

ANY president would have and should have done this.

I don’t like him any more than any one else here — and probably considerably less so than many — but anyone in this forum who wants to be taken seriously regarding the future of nuclear power would expect no less than a thorough review of safety systems and procedures.

This is ESPECIALLY so for those plants here in the USA that are near fault lines. It’s time for backups on the backups.

Post Three Mile Island, no industry has been as strongly regulated as the US commercial nuclear facilities. This is knee jerk, and if Barry goes ‘Merkel’ and REMOVES 20% of the US grid supply...welcome to the 1800s.

No energy source is without risk (there was a natural gas explosion in MINUTE today) but this what the Obama Regime trully ‘wants.’ Knocking the US standard of living to a quick second world status.

Inspector: "What's your backup plan in case these diesel generators that pump coolant go offline because of some unforseen calamity?"

"We'll go on battery backup for 8 hours"....which they did.

Maybe go down to Home Depot and bring back a whole crapload of Honda generators, I guess?

The generators are the size of locomotive engines.

The plant didn't fail: The diesel generators did.

And informed sources say the main power panels and switches for them were below ground....and were swamped with water after it breached the dike specifically built for a 5 meter tsunami. Next question?

In Arizona, our Republican-led Senate just passed a budget that included major cuts across the board. This morning, I heard a Democrat lawmaker, a woman, on the radio. She whined, "These cuts are going to leave Arizona in a dangerous position. We could have an earthquake and a tsunami just like they had in Japan!"

I almost drove off the road laughing. I thought, "Sweetheart, if we have a tsunami in Phoenix, there's going to be a helluva lot more to worry about than your stupid little budget."

You have to make sure Nuke plants are ABSOLUTELY SAFE......We've had so many deaths from accidents from these plants like 3 mile island etc.

No other energy producing processes has caused near the amount of carnage as Nuclear energy. Otherwise we'd have shut those down already.

If Nuclear power plants can't withstand a 12 on the richter scale and a direct hit by a nuclear warhead or asteroid, then IMO they SHOULD NOT BE BUILT <Eco fecal freak mental defective league />

Well maybe promoting “King Obama” to a ceremonial position like they did to the King and Queen in England has it’s merits after....

Hey Obama we are taking a lesson from Europe. You administration is now ceremonial. Enjoy your extended vacation cause it ends in January 2013.
