The other lawmakers in attendance (beside Sen. Richard Lugar R-IN) were Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-TX), Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ), Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Rep. Buck McKeon (R-NY), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA).

Deputy National Security Advisor Denis McDonough held a conference call with top Congressional staffers on Friday afternoon where he emphasized Obama's "deep respect for Congress in all of these matters," and gave a read out of the White House meeting. A recording of the call was provided to The Cable.

"The president expects the preponderance of our involvement to last a matter of days, not weeks," McDonough said.

"At the front end of this effort, the United States will contribute our unique capabilities to neutralize air defenses and military equipment that threatens civilians and civilian-populated areas to enable ongoing enforcement operations led by our partners," he said. "We will then enable and support other countries to enforce the no-fly zone...with us in a support role.... It will not be an open ended effort by the United States."

NATO, which is organizing command and control of the no-fly zone, enforcement of the arms embargo, and humanitarian assistance operations, could finished their planning as early as today, McDonough said. He also confirmed that in addition to the no-fly zone and the "no-drive zone," planning is ongoing for a "no-sail zone," which would allow greater enforcement of the arms embargo authorized by the new U.N. resolution.

Khadaffi can cause a lot more damage to the USA than we might be bargaining for.

Has Prime Minister Soros given his approval yet? Nothing happens until he does.

Ah... the trip to Rio...

The planning was underway at the CIA within hours of 9/11. The team leaders were named within the first week. Specialists arrived in Afghanistan within ten days, and preparations for the attack were fixed within two weeks. The Bush Administration did not screw around.

This will dilute our ability to respond to Iran when they unleash their proxies against Israel.

You are correct, the Bosnia adventure was only going to last a year. The no-fly zone in Iraq was in effect for years. This one will last much longer than a few days.

I HOPE it is over quickly. I shudder to think what may happen with this idiot in charge.

Don't believe for a second 0bama's lie about "not sending ground troops." Murphy's Law applies enough to warfare without a dumbass like 0bama in charge. If we think 0bama's pride is on the line now... wait until we find the "no-fly zone" didn't deter the Libyan Army from taking Benghazi.

“No-sail zone.” I always thought those were called “blockades.” And they were, by international law, an act of war.

Where’s the liberal freaks and Paulestinians out there screaming “no blood for oil?” WHERE ARE YOU MAGGOTS?

Just reviewed Operation Mockingbird. The CIA is accused of killing JFK because he wanted to destroy it. The CIA also claimed to own anyone of importance in the media. Obama was reported to be a CIA agent. Old news, I know, but good to remember what we are dealing with.

very good point. The President can just commit US forces to war without congressional authorization now?

haven’t heard anything about the war powers resolution or constitutional issues.

hopefully someone in the GOP brings it up. I notice of course that the media is conspicuously silent. Not a word from.

another thing is Obama and his people are not stupid. they know that if this goes well and Qadaffi is taken out Obama will benefit immensely. Leaders always do from a show of stength and from winning wars/taking action. See Bush after the Gulf War, Clinton in Kosovo, W in Afghanistan/Iraq, Thatcher in the Falklands, etc...

Watch, the talking point will be “Obama finished the job Reagan couldn’t. Reagan couldn’t even hit Qadaffi he missed him and took out some tents instead. Obama finished Qadaffi off, and with no US casualties to boot.” Most Americans will buy it.

I wonder how these dumba$$es in DC would feel if their children were being sent to Libya to defend dear leader’s PRIDE?!?!?

What a banana republic we have become and RINOs like Graham are not helping...but then I have heard Lindsey swings in a childless crowd....

This is Obama though so this is different. Unlike Bush and his crowd this is done with good intentions.

That makes all the difference in the world.

Bill Clinton thought his war on Yugoslaviawhere he successfully cleared out a predominantly Christian region and turned it into like 5 different islam countries. Way to go Bill.

Thanks Bill and all the liberals. You successfully turned back the clock on Balkan history, and put a Caliphate right back on the gates of Austria.

“The president expects the preponderance of our involvement to last a matter of days, not weeks,” McDonough said. “

Not entirely our choice to make once the game is afoot.
