With NFL owners and players in a standoff, the CEO of one of the nation's largest chicken farms warns that a long-lasting football lockout would be bad news for a gameday staple, the chicken wing.
"It will be a major blow," said Joe Sanderson Jr., CEO of Sanderson Farms, the fourth largest poultry company in the U.S. "If we don't have Sunday football, the demand will go down tremendously, and of course, if that happens, the price will go down."
Chicken wings are big business. According to Sanderson, wings account for 12 percent of his company's output, and the National Chicken Council estimates that in 2011, more than 13.5 billion wings will be marketed. Of course, football and wings are inextricably linked.

Amen to that. Sometimes hotter is not always better. I've made some fairly "hot" batches, and some more towards the sweet/tangy side - just depends on what I'm in the mood for, and who I'm sharing them with.
If we don't have NFL this fall, I'll still make wings. Maybe sit in front of the computer and watch weasel zippers or liveleak videos ... :-)
I couldn't agree more. Cheap chicken wings? Yeah, that would really suck...
For all I care, the NFL can stay permanently locked out. Maybe then I can finally quit hearing every single microscopic detail of their games repeated 100x over on a 24/7 basis.
That'd be too good to be true though. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against football in and of itself, but for heaven's sake, I wish American society would keep it in perspective as a **GAME**.
For some reason, chicken wings remind me of Elvis Presley.
“I dont like it so fricking hot that you cant taste the tang, vinegar.”
I’m the same way. I just don’t get the places that offer “Death sauce” or “nuclear hot” wings. Each to their own, but for me good buffalo wings for me are all about balance. Some heat, some tang, a bit of saltiness, all complementing the juicy chicken meat.
Pork is good if enough fat is left on to flavor it but so is beef. Rib steaks are delicious as is prime rib. Of course the wife doesn't agree with me on all this but I've found the saying that opposites attract to be true. :-)
Guilty as charged. Every once in a while I have to remind myself it is just entertainment and no more relevant to the real world than any other form of entertainment.
Dang, you’re giving me a strong hankering for some wings right now! LOL
Regarding cheap wings...25 years or so ago wings were dirt cheap, we'd buy a bunch and fix them different ways. My favorite is Mandarin but they're a little more hassle to fix.
Yea you got to watch that factory pork, not enough fat- dry like a turkey breast. got to cook it slow, which is hard cause they slice it too thin usually.
We raised a few hogs off and on and always had the chops cut 1” thick and the shoulder steaks 3/4”. I’ve been guilty of feeding the hogs fish heads and deer hides and rotten apples, etc, and the pork was not nearly as white. Butcher remarked on it, much different than the grain-fed clones.
I posted a photo like that once and got flagged!
How do you get away with it?!
I make my own bacon when I can get fresh bellies which is hard in Memphis, believe it or not. I doesn’t get any better than that!
wings and breasts.
(But don't tell anyone!)
So, you’re saying the players and owners don’t give a cluck?
the price ought to drop anyways - they are more expensive than chicken thighs here in Rochester
good to see Meghan McCain has finally gotten a respectable job
