I don’t know a single reason that a farmer in Iowa would need someone for 600 man hours in August and September. The machinery can do it all now.
These workers are not on the farm picking anything. They are roofers, waitresses, working in egg factories and meat processing factories. You know, what all of us uneducated people did in hard times or when we were kids. /s
You are right, Iowa farms, in general, are about corn, wheat, soy beans, all harvested by machine, not lettuce, grapes and oranges.
