Democrats want Congress to sign off on Libya attack

By: John Bresnahan and Jonathan Allen March 19, 2011 04:27 PM EDT

Even as American warships have begun bombing military targets inside Libya, several leading House Democrats are pushing for President Barack Obama to seek congressional approval to allow U.S. forces to help enforce a “no-fly” zone over Libya.

Rep. John Larson (Conn.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, is setting up a conference call with members this afternoon to discuss U.S. involvement in Libya. Larson is one of those Democrats who want Obama to get congressional approval for American involvement in the effort.

Other Democrats with the same view as Larson are Reps. Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.) and Dennis Kucinich (Ohio). On the Senate side, Sen. Richard Lugar (Ind.), top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, has called on Obama to seek congressional sign-off on the Libyan operation.

Larson is putting the call together so that rank-and-file lawmakers can get more information from Democrats who were at the White House on Friday to be briefed about U.S. involvement in the Libyan campaign. American warships began missile attacks on Libyan air-defense units on Saturday as part of “Operation Odyssey Dawn,” according to media reports.

“It’s an update for members,” Larson spokesman Ellis Brachman said.

But today’s Democratic Caucus call may also turn into a debate over whether Democrats should push the president to seek congressional approval for U.S. involvement in Libya under the War Powers Act. Larson himself believes the president has a responsibility to do so. Several House Republicans, including Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), have challenged the White House on the same issue in the past.

They don’t get it. It’s a DEMOCRAT president. He doesn’t need permission from Congress, he got it from the UN.

It’s not like he’s pro American or anything. Laws are for Republicans and conservatives.

I have no doubt that they will sign off but shouldn't this have come first?

And the national interest of this is?

Oil?

While the federal government prohibits developing indigenous sources of energy?

Coal was public enemy number 1 not too long ago.

America, you get the government you, oh so richly, deserve.

What is the point here. Moamar was supposedly the buddy of Obama and Farrakhan. Did they have a falling out? Is Hillary just doing this to get FReepers to call her a “war leader” and vote for her? Is Ears fully distracted by Brazilian dancing babes and basketball?

I wonder how Hillary/Obama/Soros, the other leftists would like it if other countries try to bomb the US to prevent the US Government from using force against US citizens when they inevitably turn the US military on American patriots in the coming years.

If it further alienates Hussammie Obammie and the dimbulbs in congress from their supporters, then go for it.

As for killing mooslimbs, there are far too many of them on this planet to begin with.

After 4 combat tours in Iraq and Shitcanistan, I have come to realize that those people are truly evil.

“You’ve got muslims killing muslims. I say we wait a while”

I’m with you for sure.....Yesterday here in Denver there were two gaggles of muslims in “traditional garb” at the corners of Colorado Blvd and Evans Ave. waving the Libya and American flags with signs saying Gadhafy is a murderer. This muslim area of the city has never flown a US flag any where or at anytime that I’ve ever seen. Nor have they ever protested, and I pay attention, any muslim violence such as the attempted subway bomber arrested here in Denver. And now they want our support because muslims are killing muslims?

All I can say is that they must have run out of Jews and Christians to kill.........let them have a good go at each other and we’ll deal with those left standing...one couldn’t be any worse than the other.

I guess it’s easier to ask forgiveness then for permission. Wouldn’t you normally ask before?

There is also concern about the internal Democratic discussion without Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who is on a trip to Italy and then Afghanistan. Pelosi issued a statement on Friday backing Obama’s decision on the Libyan no-fly zone.

Pelosi and Obama both out of country when a war starts? Of well, that's one way to avoid questions.

With thier obvious hatred for America and their new suport for the Illegal against Libya, it’s clear these Mudslimes know something we don’t, probably that the “rebels” are a bunch of really virulent MB and AQ types who’ll do a lot more damage to us than Quaddafi, who’s pretty well been put in his box, ever will.

Even the Communists Party (formally the Democratic Party) have yet to realize that they have no control over their dictator. The RATS are so confused that the party will explode one of these days.

Note the Code Pink silence.

They could care less about andy wars if it cant' be used to garner votes for the DNC.

Even Justin Raimondo the complete 100% antiwar fraud, is working very hard to defend Obama on this one.

Not sure about the legalities, but it should have gone to the Congress for approval, that’s just good wisdom. Odd that no member of Congress bothered to put forward some kind of bill authorizing use of force.
