I hate writing a statement calling for the killing of a human being - even a horrific human being like Khaddafi. But if history has taught us anything, it's that this guy holds a grudge. Reagan bombed Tripoli in response to Khadaffi's involvement murder of U.S. servicemen in Germany. It's unfortunate we didn't kill the bastard then. Three years later, Khaddafi responded with the Pan Am bombing.
What will Khaddafi do this time?
If our objective is to defend the Libyan rebels, we can't just scare Khaddafi - we'll have to kill him. Because now we've ensured the rebels will never be safe as long as Khaddafi is alive. And I fear any mission lead by France and a weak Democrat in the White House won't be sustaining or effective.
The lesson is: if you start a war, you don't walk away in the middle of it. You destroy the enemy. Bush 41 made the same mistake by leaving Saddam in power after the Persian Gulf War. If he had taken Saddam out - there likely would have been no Iraq War.
I just pray that we don't pay a heavy price for this later, through some bloody retaliation against Western civilians, or a bloody war to finish the job of taking Khaddafi out.
Ok, then what?
No! The lesson is, you don't start a war without a clear objective. I'm sure their is a clear objective, I'm just not sure we will ever be told what that objective may be.
ack, there instead of their.
I just find it ironic, GW was lambasted for starting a war for oil. And Obama does the same thing.
Okay, and after Khadaffi is dead? Let al-Qaeda take over? Or put in an occupation force? Or what?
The objective is "make Obama look tough" for the 2012 elections.
We’ll probably need boots on the ground to build another regime that’s friendly to the West.
Listen, I don’t agree with what France/the UN/Obama is doing. I want to stress that. I’m just stating that if history is any guide, we’ve got to finish what we’ve started.
That's my point, we've basically now committed ourselves to having boots on the ground in Libya for at least the next five years, we have crossed the Rubicon, there is no turning back now.
Perhaps.
Perhaps it's the one calling him on his Blackberry that is calling the shots.
Clinton did the same thing as well. We have a propagandist machine - the obamamedia choral amen choir. It’s embarrassing.
Don’t feel bad. the best thing we can do is drive the entire Kadaffy family into one of their bunkers, then bomb the piss out of it with every bunker buster we have until there is nothing but a large glowing hole in the ground where the entire lot of them used to be.
Think of the instant improvement to the World gene pool.
We’re going to have to kill Saddam Husein in order to, oh, wait ...
I won’t shed a tear Bean Counter. What scares me is what’s at stake in the aftermath. At best, we might be looking at an Iraq style occupation, costing billions of dollars and precious American lives. At worst, we kill Khaddafi then take our eye off Libya, like we did with Afghanistan. We all know what happened because of that.
I hope I’m wrong about all of this. We should have never pulled off this bone-headed move in the first place.
It’s a sad day in my life when I have to wonder if Khadafi is right in this situation. Who is he fighting? Rebels or AQ rebels? I don’t love the guy. He should dead.
That said, what are we doing. The quotes I’ve read suggest the bar has been set really low now. Any government that kills it’s own people is fair game. That’s great if the people killed were good guys. But it is a matter of perspective.
What if the people are bad guys?
An Obama devotee stated once to George Bush, “You break it, you own it.” General Powell. Obama owns it now, notwithstanding the lies and vissitudes of the media. Now he needs to explain to the entire world why he shilled for the Hussein Iraq murderous dictator, and why it is fine to attack this murderous dictator. Of course, we have pictures of Barry hugging Gadaffi. Buds,.....you know. Now take a seat under Barry’s bus.
Yes and then the war crimes trial will last for a couple of years trying to decide which pilots to execute.
“What if the people are bad guys?”
Exactly right. Just like many of the people we helped in Afghanistan were.
You won't see those.
Of course the lefties love trudging out the pictures of Rumsfeld shaking Saddam's hand from 30 years ago.
