” A loaf of bread $3.19

The same brand (my favorite) was exactly $1.64 three years ago. “

I know - that’s why I decided to teach myself to bake my own bread (the way my Grandma did it - no steenkin’ ‘bread machine’ for me)... It took three days of false-starts and disasters to get something recognizable (and/or edible), but it’s been six weeks, now, since I’ve bought bread at the store....

I haven’t broken the cost down exactly, yet, but my guesstimate is somewhere between 50-75 cents per loaf - and there’s the added benefit that home-made bread makes toast (and grilled cheese sandwiches) that are a completely new and wonderful experience....

;)

Good for you. I have been making my own bread for years with a bread machine I got at Goodwill for $5. I also make my own freezer jams (very simple and delicious) and dehydrate then freeze all vegetables out of the garden that we don’t eat. If We didn’t live in the city and I could do more I would.

Same here. I found baking my own bread very inexpensive (so far). If you’re baking from bulk yeast and storing in the fridge be sure you “bloom” the yeast at least 10 minutes for a sure rise. Lots of good tips on line. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
