But can we trust them in what form of government they say the plan to establish? Or are they, like Castro, saying what they need to say to get our help?

I'd be more inclined to believe they were lying if they had one guy who seemed to call all the shots and he was on TV making all kinds of claims and promises.

Right now what we have is a relatively anonymous crew who appear to agree on two points: (1) Qadaffi is a bad guy and (2) we want to restore our original constitution.

Once the Colonel is gone, why wouldn't the military rule the roost? How are we going to determine who wins? Iraq and nation-building again?

Why wouldn't the more likely outcome be another military coup a la Qadaffi?

Because the resistance sees the military as a compromised institution, filled with Qadaffi loyalists and henchmen.

Once the Colonel is gone, why wouldn't the military rule the roost?

Because the rebel forces are led by civilians and ad hoc militia, and are not comprised solely of army units.

How are we going to determine who wins?

Leveling the playing field.

Iraq and nation-building again?

Libya is not Iraq. It is a different country with a different set of issues and a much less complicated religious and demographic outlook.

Iraq was split into Sunni and Shi'ite religiously and into Arabs and Kurds ethnically.

Libya is about 99% Sunni and about 95% mixed Berber/Arab ancestry. The only recognizable minority is the 5% of the population who are full-blooded, non-Arabic speaking desert nomads. They are hundreds of miles away from the fighting and generally have no interaction with any Libyan government.

The main fracture points in Libya are not religious or ethnic - the fracture point is a disagreement over dictatorship versus popular government.

Would this mean fighting/destroying the Libyan military and arming and training the rebels?

Not necessarily. It mostly means eliminating asymmetry in aircraft, armor and communications.

I have no great knowledge or prophetic wisdom here, but, for some reason, I can easily see a military officer, leading other revolting officers and their troops and equipment and having much more might than the tribes. Unless we are willing to do the tribes fighting for them, and that means ground troops.

I appreciate your replies and views.
