Carrying a gun out in the open could become a reality in Oklahoma.
State lawmakers have shot down several gun proposals but one Senate bill still alive has some surprising opponents.
SB 129, sponsored by Senator Steven Russell R-Oklahoma City, would give anyone 18 years of age or older the right to openly carry a gun without a license or training.
FOX23’s Abbie Alford reports why the Oklahoma Rifle Association is saying no to the current proposal.
The uproar with lawmakers first started on campus, college students and faculty member should be able to carry guns. Those proposals were shot down by lawmakers.
Then a bill bringing the vote to the people would allow anyone older than 21 to openly carry a gun with training. That proposal also failed.
"I think you should be able to carry a firearm,” says gun rights supporter Tony Venable.
So does Senator Russell, an Iraqi war veteran who thinks anyone 18 and older should be able to openly carry a gun.
SB129 passed in the Senate and is now in the House for a vote in the Public Safety Committee.
"If you look at our military they are already carrying guns at 18,” says Venable.
An opponent of the bill says there’s training with military personnel.

They are reported to oppose the bill because it allows young adults to open carry. We allow them to vote. With friends like these...
I will keep carrying discretely myself...except for when I am in the bush.
I very seriously doubt that. Who is going to pick a fight with someone openly armed??

This I can believe, and remedying that is one of the main legitimate reasons to "open carry"...to educate these folks that a firearm isn't going to jump out of the owners holster and shoot them.
I prefer concealed carry for tactical reasons, and would like to see "constitutional concealed carry" (no government blessing needed to do so). But if someone wishes to "open carry" it shouldn't be prohibited.

I grew up in Oklahoma - long time ago. Most of the adult males I knew carried a gun. If not on them, in their vehicle and several were in the house. A rifle handy by the door was common. I grew up thinking that everyone had guns.
My Dad was a preacher and went unarmed. Had a big baptism in a river one fine spring day. The husband of one of the ladies being baptised objected and showed up with a long gun of some sort. Members of the congregation quelled that quickly as many of them were armed. No shots fired. Peaceful resolution. Law enforcement not required.

I'm sorry, but if a law-abiding citizen has the right to carry a firearm then I believe that they should have the right to carry it anywhere they may go, especially on public property.
It’s the cops that DO NOT want OC in Oklahoma. Yet when I am having lunch in downtown Tulsa, they walk in in slacks and ties, without badges clearly visible, no one even notices. When this passes I will just put on a tie, That way the sheeple won’t stampede.
