Detroit Lost A Quarter Of Its Population In The Last 10 Years, And Is Now At 100-Year Lows
Business Insider ^ | 03/23/2011 | Grace Wyler

Detroit lost 25% of its population - or 237,000 people - over the last decade, according to new U.S. Census data.

It's the largest percentage drop for any American city, the NYT reports, with the exception of New Orleans, which lost 29% of the pop. after Hurricane Katrina. The exodus was driven primarily by the collapse of the auto industry and the mass migration of middle-class African Americans to the suburbs.

Detroit's official population is now 713,777, the lowest it has been since 1910. That's down from a peak of 2 million in 1950, when Detroit was the nation's fifth largest city.

Even demographers who track Detroit's population were surprised by such a dramatic loss.

“I never thought it would go this low,” demographer Kurt Metzger told the NYT. “All of us are kind of shocked, but it means we have to work that much harder.”

Mayor David Bing plans to challenge the census findings, saying the city can qualify for more federal and state funding if it can get its population count to 775,000.

It remains to be seen how the staggering population loss will affect Bing's plans to revitalize the Motor City by shrinking city finances and infrastructure in line with Detroit's new size.

“All of us are kind of shocked, but it means we have to work that much harder.”

One wonders "at what?" Do they propose to physically drag people into Detroit and nail them there?

They mention the mass migration of middle-class African Americans from Detroit.

While some might think that the decline of Detroit and other cities is because of “white flight” and racism, etc., we see that middle class blacks are moving away too. And that suggests it’s not really a racial matter at all. Anyone who wants to avoid the gangs and drugs and decay and God knows what continue to move out of places which encourage gangs, drugs and God knows what else.

In 1900 the population of Butte, MT was in excess of 100,000.

In 2000 the population was 33,892.

There would be more people there now if it was not for the unions.

(Copper mining at the turn of the century was the HUGE employer, eventually it faded and the population went elsewhere - FYI.)

They still have the flying fist statue and the ability to beat the heck out of whitey downtown whenever they feel like it,100 on 1 of course... doesn’t that count for something?

Detroit is dying. I was there a couple of years ago and saw for myself that half the houses in the lower income (not the projects) areas were boarded up and empty. The city is offering some abandoned properties for $1 but no one is buying because they want you to invest tens of thousands of dollars to fix the place up. No thanks.

Yeah, more welfare will attract business and people. Mayor Bingle is pretty stupid.

I believe the number of Hispanics increased slightly; that says a lot about where the nation is heading, and shouldn’t be overlooked. I’ve mentioned on other threads how Hispanics are displacing blacks in the workplace, schools, and even prisons; I’ll now add Detroit to that list.

In 1965 I was working on an Orange County construction site with a young black carpenter, who resided in Santa Ana, Calif.

One weekend the “Watts Riots” took place in Los Angeles, and when we returned to work after the weekend, the fellow said:

“I was going to go up to LA to see my mother over the weekend, but those n****rs are shooting n****rs.”

They actually just want you to start contributing property taxes into the gubmint pot; I’m sure they’ll overlook any neglect of the property as long as they’re getting quarterly payments to pay the person who collects the quarterly payments.
