In a report for Thursday's CBS Early Show, contributor Taryn Winter Brill fretted over the impact of movie theater popcorn on Americans' waistlines: "Have you ever wondered how many calories you're actually consuming in that large popcorn with butter? You probably don't want to know. Pretty soon, though, you may not have a choice."
Moments later, nutritionist Katherine Brooking declared the popular concession treat to be "a calorie bomb waiting to explode." Brill then touted a government solution to the problem: "Hoping to defuse this high caloric catastrophe, the FDA is working on a provision in the health care law requiring chain establishments which serve food to list the calorie count of their menu items." She added that Brooking and others "applaud the move."
Near the end of her report, Brill explained that "Movie theater chains are pushing back, though, arguing the original health care bill was never intended to include them." She cheered how "Undeterred, the FDA is looking to sound the alarm on hidden calories. And ultimately shift Americans toward a healthier lifestyle."

I think they need to look at the lard currently in the White House.
It’s not like I’m eating this every day....and I take half of it home. Geez...these folks should just go away!!
Only go once or twice a year so I can splurge :)
These are the kind of people who think they should be running your life.
good lord.
Went to the movie, asked for the special which was popcorn and 2 drinks.....$18.50.
NO THANKS!!
It seems that more and more the federal government is defining what we can and cannot do. What ever happened to the freedom to decide for yourself?
Exactly, it’s the bloody prices that are the scandal.
They may have finally found the one thing that will drive McDonald's out of business. /s
Is this “nanny state” thinking carried to an extreme?
Reminds me of studies a few years ago by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. That group studied various ethnic foods. Their studies concluded that Italian food and Mexican food are fattening. And they singled out Italian and Mexican as foods which we should limit our intake of.
Or, think of it another way, how many of you go to the movies every day, and consume an entire large popcorn everyday? Plus all of your regular meals as well?
When they were creating our government, the Anti-Federalists warned that should you grant the Federal Government the right to tax the people, they would eventually be there in every detail of your life to run it for you.
Prophetic.
They want to tell us what to eat and how much water to flush the toilet with. Those founders were darned prescient.
Our government excels in denying the simple pleasures of life...for OUR own good.
Activist “journalists” like activist government —no matter how futile activist government is. The FDA isn’t going to stop any people from getting fat or getting heart attacks. It’s just another employment program for incompetent but opinionated nannies.
You must have missed the “healthy lifestyle” clause in the Constitution.
From what I read in that excerpt you’ll still have the option, you’ll just have to read the side of the popcorn box that says POPCORN KILLS!!!! Or something like that.
Last month I had (at least) quadruple butter on my trashcan sized bucket of popcorn. The theatre in Bozeman has the butter dispenser on the patron side of the counter ... a butter-lover’s dream come true. The nice lady behind the counter even filled the bucket halfway and let me soak that in butter and then she filled it up the rest of the way. There had to be a thousand calories involved in this. And, yes, butter is a food group in our house.
Who eats movie theater popcorn anymore? They ruined it when they banned coconut oil. I used to love having movie theater popcorn a couple times a year. Microwave popcorn tastes better than that garbage now.
I’m having several Sam’s I think I’m on #4 these people are idiots, as a non movie goer how often does one to go and gorge themselves with the evil pop corn. The country is going to hell and this is the big issue..
