CBO: Taxing mileage a 'practical option' for revenue enhancement
The Hill ^ | 03/24/11 | Pete Kasperowicz

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this week released a report that said taxing people based on how many miles they drive is a possible option for raising new revenues and that these taxes could be used to offset the costs of highway maintenance at a time when federal funds are short.

The report discussed the proposal in great detail, including the development of technology that would allow total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to be tracked, reported and taxed, as well as the pros and cons of mandating the installation of this technology in all vehicles.

"In the past, the efficiency costs of implementing a system of VMT charges — particularly the costs of users' time for slowing and queuing at tollbooths — would clearly have outweighed the potential benefits from more efficient use of highway capacity," CBO wrote. "Now, electronic metering and billing are making per-mile charges a practical option.

We who ACTUALLY PAY OUR TAXES will be paying even more for 0’s vacations, his wife’s vacations, the jaunts with the family take-alongs and SUV gas the wasteful leftist in this administration are using.

The GPS would be unconstitutional, but it would be efficient. Have you ever known the federal government to do anything efficient?

that technology is already in place. Long haulers now are on electronic logs - and GPS keeps track of their 'square footage'. the system can even tell if they brake too hard. They know exactly where they are - like I said, to the square foot - at any time.

So, I predict they'll create the Department of Federal Mileage Inspection. That should be good for 15-20K SEIU jobs. Every year, you'll be required to get your mileage inspected, where you'll also have to pay an annual inspection fee and whatnot.

don't swallow the bilge that this is about the miles we drive! It's about TRACKING US! The reason these Socialists get away with taking over our lives, drip-drip-drip, is because the sheeple (fundamentally honest themselves,) naively swallow their hype. With these people, you ALWAYS have to watch OTHER hand.

How about my "practical solution" to expediture reduction?

It's called shoot, shovel, and shut up.

“We’re already taxed for the miles we drive through the taxes collected on the gas we buy to drive those miles.”

Thank you for saying so. Spot-on!

GPS can be disabled.

Not unless you're a friend of The One and get a waiver...it will be against the law to disconnect

The “problem” up in DC is certainly NOT the lack of taxation!!

>”I have a son who is a longhauler and he can tell when he crosses certain state lines because of the condition of the roads.”

LOL! Thinking about it, you’re absolutely right! Back when I was stationed at Offutt AFB, NE, I would routinely drive to the St. Louis, MO area to visit my family. I could always tell the moment I had crossed over from Nebraska to Iowa because the roads suddenly were like driving on gravel. Then, I could instantly tell the moment I hit the Missouri border because the roads were nice and smooth again.

Cheers

They have to “install” first.

Not in my vehicles, they won’t.

I had heard that the technology would be at the pump, where current gas taxes are already collected. Everytime you pulled up to the pump, equip in your vehicle would communicate with the pump.

the technology is already up and running - ask the long haulers

I live in a state where the major streets and roads are in a constant state of ‘construction’ - with the purpose, evidently, of making the driving conditions worse when they finish than when they started....

“The GPS method will allow certain exemptions for poor, businesses, UNION MEMBERS........................”

You forgot politicians, and retired politicians...but not challengers, since GPS is a GREAT WAY to know what your opponent is doing at any time.

The scumbag politicians are still reeling from the collapse of their “global warming” scam and the tax windfall they were expecting from “carbon trading” and its associated banking and Chicago Stock Exchange shenanigans.

The scum will stop at nothing.

The fact is, people already pay a “mileage tax” every time they fill up their gas tanks, the frequency of which is based on how many miles they drive freaking duh.

People are going to be mighty disappointed when Obamacare doesn’t get repealed. If it goes down it’ll at the Supreme Court otherwise the most we’ll see from the GOP are revisions. These laws once enacted are like vampires, it takes a miracle to kill them.

Where do all the federal gas taxes go?

To Unions so they can pay off politicians with "campaign contributions."

Who then dream up new ways to tax us.

So they can use the new tax "revenue" to pay the Unions.

Which then buy off the politicians.

Already possible-at least in Texas because of our annual safety inspections. Went on-line to get auto ins quote for car ins which was due to expire shortly after my inspection. Up popped a picture of my car in my driveway with my mileage which was only off by about 100 miles with a question: “Is this the car you want to insure?”

The GPS technology is already “shovel-ready” and proven.

Rather than start from the ground up to design, test, and implement a whole new “smart” metering system-—which would take about a decade at the pace the government works (remember how long it took to get your watered-down HDTV?), it is more feasible to install a ready-made GPS unit and program it to dump its memory when given the correct set of commands. I do it all the time with my GPS device. I know everywhere I’ve driven in the last three years and how many miles. It’s all right here on my computer.

Cheers
