DAMASCUS, Syria – Troops opened fire on protesters in cities across Syria and pro- and anti-government crowds clashed in the capital's historic old city as one of the Mideast's most repressive regimes sought to put down demonstrations that exploded nationwide Friday demanding reform.

The minority Alwawite regime knows that a successful revolution would likely to a massacre of Alawites. So it has no compunction about killing unarmed protesters to remain in power.

The army and the secret police will protect the regime because if it falls... bang, bang, bang - they’re dead.

The Alawis from mountainous Latakia on the coast of Syria north of Lebanon are a secretive heterodox sect that has beliefs and rituals considered heretical by mainstream Islam. But they pretend to be Shia Muslim when it suits them. They comprise 10% of Syria’s population and dominate the Ba’ath Party, army and secret police. The Assad regime has been in power for 40 years and is considered the most repressive regime in the Arab World.

So are we to assume that President Hussein is not only a Muslim, but a Shia at that? :)

I really think that Beck has stumbled onto something; that Hussein is lining up middle eastern governments so as to arrange maximum hostility to Israel. Then, they’ll let the Palestinians attack Israel and wait for an Israeli response before attacking Israel under a UN no fly zone mandate.

That would be a bit of a more difficult no-fly zone to enforce.

Just as difficult as eliminating the nuke reactor the Norks were building for Syria? They had no idea anything was happening until things started blowing up, big time. Our friends in Israel have some pretty neat toys they will show us if the MB, Hezbollah and Hamas decide it is time. I figure the new Egyptian regime will/has open the border to Gaza and load them up for bear. Just like always, it will not be a circus bear but a grizzly with an attutude they start poking.

Syria has a large (compared to Libya) air force and I do not believe that Israel would be allowed to take part in any interdiction in Syria. I assume NATO would fly out of Iraq.

But we provided the electronic warfare coverage that jammed the Syrian radars that allowed the Israelis to take out the facility. To assume that Obama and or NATO is going to go after any satellite of Iran, yea right. Any assault on Syria will be by Israel defending itself, again because it was attacked and they learned something from the nuke plant operation.
