Whether they realize it or not Americans live in a constant state of fear every day. I’m not referring to the fears of everyday life like losing a job or having an accident of some kind, but rather a more sinister and devious fear; a fear that Americans only dare talk about around the water cooler or at cocktail parties so as not to be taken seriously; a fear they try to mask with a with a whimsical tone of sarcasm or indifference. Whether Americans want to admit it or not, it’s the single greatest fear in their lives: fear of the government.
Right about now there are those reading this thinking: Don Cooper is a drunk. To which I reply: what’s that got to do with it? Maybe more people should drink if that’s what it takes to sober up and confront what they are really afraid of.
In their defense, I’ll admit that reality is scary. No argument that living in delusion is warmer, safer, cozier, and easier. Pretending is always more fun than reality, that’s why we go to the movies. But fear of the government is a fear that invades a person’s soul and – since the government intervenes in every aspect of our lives – it affects every move we make every day.
Fear of the government is hard to recognize and acknowledge. It’s a fear that we are taught early on in life and to which we become accustomed. We inevitably end up tucking it away in the far reaches of our minds in order to function “normally” every day and live our lives. But just as a car backfiring will trigger a sense of fear from a shell-shocked veteran, so too can the State trigger that…

Then contact your local homeschooling association. Check Google for associations in your state. Your library may have a list, and of course the Homeschooling Legal Defense Association.
My homeschoolers are adults now. We were among the pioneers in our community. It is soooooo much easier now.
By the way...We found it was actually cheaper to homeschool than to send our kids to government school. Just the savings in school clothing alone paid for the curriculum we bought, and there were no activity or school trip fees. I would not allow my children to take the school bus so we had gas savings as well.
( Our adventures with the school bus is a topic for another post. In two consecutive years children were crushed to death by our county school buses....very sad.)

Nevadan, I am truly sorry that you would feel the need for police threat to instill fear in your students. I can't imagine having to spend a career going to work every day in such an environment. In contrast, homeschooling my children was the most satisfying work I have ever done.
The point of my post #13 was clear. Government schools need to be abolished precisely because of the government compulsory attendance and the police threat that stands behind every government teacher and principal. Simply by attending children become accustomed to government compulsion and the laws that confine children ( whose only crime was not being aborted) to a prison-like environment.
Children soon learn that truant officers will track them down if they do not report for their daily prison confinement. If they resist, real police with real guns are sent. If they resist further, they soon face court appearances ankle collars, and even confinement in hard time kiddie-prison ( euphemistically calls “alternative school”.)
In post #16 it is evident that you would approve of fear of police to force learning in your classroom.
Perhaps if you were in a private school where parents valued your services and imparted those beliefs to the students, you would have a more satisfying teaching experience.
Once my homeschool children achieved basic literacy and numeracy they literally taught themselves. They loved it! I couldn't have kept them from learning if I had tried, at least not in the home environment. Maybe if I had sent them to our local prison-like government schools I could have killed their desire to learn.
By the way, our local government school in Maryland had 4 first grades. The government prison-like school in our current community also has 4 first grades and similar numbers for every other grade. This isn't a school. It is a Marxist, government compliance, indoctrination factory.

One more thing:
While the threat of police action, as well as truant officer visits, court action, parental fines, ankle bracelets, time in “alternative school, and other means will get a child into the government prison-like school, the child still has control of his mind.
Once in the school the child can resist and refuse to learn. From your statement, I suppose that is what you must face every day. Again, I am sorry.

No I think it fits inside the topic. And it is also good sound advice.
Wintertime, to be honest, I don’t respond to your posts in order to engage you in a discussion - I’ve found that to be a complete waste of time because you never listen - you just “emote”. You don’t follow through on the logical consequences of your statements. You refuse to see anything outside of the paradigm you’ve created about public schools.
And, while I appreciate your sincere heartfelt concern for me in my job situation, you don’t have to be. It’s true that working with kids can be challenging, but I still love them (most of the time) and I enjoy working with them very much. So, while they could use a little more respect (or “fear” as you call it) - they are also eager to learn - even in public school. Sometimes it is so much fun teaching with them that I wonder how I could have such a wonderful job. Of course, it’s not always that way, but when the little guys spontaneously give you a hug as they come in the door, it makes all the tough days worth it.
The tragic part about you and me is that you and I are both conservatives and are probably very close on our moral and political beliefs. But, the truth is that destroying public schools is not going to save America. Homeschooling and private schools are not going to save America. Getting rid of Obama, Obamacare, and every liberal in office is not going to save America. And, while I would love to see conservatives elected to every office in our county, state, and federal governments, I realize that even that is not going to ultimately save Americe either. No, in my opinion, our nation is now so spiritually bankrupt that only a spiritual revival sent to us by a merciful God can save us.
So, in the future, I want you to know that I will continue, from time to time, respond to some of your posts. But, I only will do so, as I mentioned above, not to engage with you - but only for the benefit of others reading on the same thread. Just thought you ought to know.
If children are sent into godless schools day after day they will learn to think and reason godlessly. They must simply to cooperate with the classroom activities and discussion. Having a population of voters trained to think godlessly **has** political, cultural and religious consequences.

I didn't create the paradigm. Government schools are, and **always** have been, socialist, compulsory, and collectivist managed by voter mobs ( school boards). At best they offered up a generic and lukewarm Protestantism. Today they are utterly godless. This has had, and will continue to have, non-neutral religious, political, and cultural consequences for our nation and its citizens.
At this point....I agree. Only God can save us.
That was an awesome post. It mirrors so closely what I see and feel in my classroom.
I had a smile in church yesterday when the pastor used the verse “Let you light shine before men so that they will see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.” I’m proud to be a Christian conservative teacher and I make no attempts to hide my Christianity or my conservativeness in my classroom.
I’m not going to go into a scenario of “What if...?” or “If you...?” except to say that I value my relationship with my Heavenly Father more than anything else and as long as I am comfortable that I’m doing the right thing, I will continue to do it.

Hell, we played that as kids when I was growing up. Usually involved a field - none too smooth - a beat up football....and about 11 to 15 guys of all about the same age. Object? Once you got the ball, run like hell until all the other guys "smeared" you. Then, chuck the ball to someone else you wanted to "smear"!!
Incredible fun!!
Of course, today, all the parents would be accused of not protecting their kids; the kids would have to wear helmets, teeth guards, elbow and knee pads...the "play" would have to have adult supervision, with referees...and the bigger kids - who usually did most of the "hard tackling" would be accused of being "bullies" and not allowed to play at all.
And we believe we're better off than we were????
