New Jersey Transit train hits car with two women inside

RIVER EDGE — A New Jersey Transit train tossed a car 80 feet when the two collided Saturday, causing non-life-threatening injuries to the vehicle’s occupants, a spokesman for the rail line said.

The car's driver, Hyung Seo, 77, of Palisades Park suffered a shoulder injury and the passenger, Yoo Young, 77, of Hillsdale suffered head, back and neck injuries. Both women were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said.

The Nissan Maxima apparently entered the Main Street railroad crossing at about 7:35 a.m. as the train was passing through, he said, breaking a safety gate. The gates were down and flashing lights, and bells were operating, Stessel said.

The train hit the rear passenger side of the car, which was traveling westbound, as the train approached the New Bridge Landing station. Upon seeing the car on the crossing, the engineer fully applied the brakes and blew the horn. The train was moving at about 40 mph when it struck the Nissan, Stessel said.

The train, No. 2102, was headed to Hoboken from Spring Valley, N.Y., with 30 passengers, none of whom was injured.

Passengers on the 2102 train and passengers on the next train, No. 2104, were bused around the incident to a waiting train on the opposite side, Stessel said. They encountered a 1½-hour delay in their trip.

Stessel said the broken safety gate was replaced and trains were operating normally by 9:30 a.m.

I hate it when these trains jump way off their tracks to go chase after cars!

“NJT? They rarely move over 15 mph”

That is what I am wondering. It does not look like the train was moving all that fast or the car “bounced” off the front.

Calling Ray LaHood, please pick up the red phone.
Nissan had a sticky accelerator petal - time to destroy Nissan’s reputation and sue them.

You are correct. Considering the location it happened definitely Korean. In certain towns in Bergen County NJ, where this happened, you take your life in your hands when in a crosswalk when Mrs Kim or Mrs Yoo are headed your way.

>>According to the article the driver was elderly, and Chinese, so it’s a terrible driver two-fer. :)<<

I used to feel bad about buying into this stereotype. Then I visited China and saw how they drive there. Believe me, it explained everything.

Based on the headline it sounds like it was the trains fault.

If the women had been in an SUV, the blame would have been reversed. The driver would still have been guiltless, mind you, but at least the poor train wouldn't have been falsely accused.
