llinois calls it a use tax, and it's a new line on the form and il. has made it prominemt.

"Use tax on internet, mail order, or other out-of-state purchases from UT Worksheet or UT Table in the instructions. Do not leave blank"

...... "If we find that you owe additional tax, we may assess the additional tax plus applicable penalties and interest. We conduct routine audits based on information received from third parties, including the U.S. Customs Service and other states."


There is no doubt in my mind that somewhere down the road, this will come back to haunt the residents of Illinois.... anybody with a computer or gets mail delivered or UPS or FEDEX, ...watch out.

It used to be on the form several years ago. Back when I did my own taxes, I would fill in an amount. With having an accountant and it no longer being a line (but a schedule) for some time, I forgot all about it until last year.

It’s not that hard to at least put an estimate and pay something.

I may not like the concept of the use tax, but it is a law.
