Power: Obama gave 'meaning and content' to human rights, democracy
Politico ^ | March 28, 2011 | Ben Smith

A foreign policy adviser to President Obama said this evening that the Administration has "rehabilitated" the concept of human rights, tarnished by the Iraq war, in a way that laid the groundwork for international collaboration.

Samantha Power, a senior director on the National Security Council best known for her human rights advocacy before she entered the White House, spoke at Columbia University in New York City two hours before the president's planned speech in Libya tonight.

Obama "has used his pulpit and a number of speeches ... to kind of clear the brush that had gathered around the norms in previous years, rehabilitating some of the principles and cleaning up some fo the associations," she said, referring to international values of democracy and human rights.

"The words 'democracy' and 'human rights' have come to acquire meaning and content that Barack Obama and his administration provided," she said.

"His success in rehabilitating those norms or providing that ocntent has actually made it easier for other governments to stand with us," she said. She didn't refer directly to the coalition now battling the Libyan government.

One of the key elements of this "clearing of the brush," she said, had been "recognizing that human rights had to begin at home, and that his task and the Administration's task was to strenghten the power of our example."

She cited Obama's torture bank, his "return to the Geneva Conventions, and his push to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

"He also renounced the imposition of democracy by military force," she said.

“He also renounced the imposition of democracy by military force,”

Until Libya. Oh that’s right, Islamic hegemony is
not democratic.

It ain’t war when the Leftists do it — it’s indignant compassion.

OK, SamPow, please explain why Libyans are more entitled to having their human rights preserved than say the people if Darfur, North Korea, etc, etc.

Obie has put himself in the position of deciding who is worthy and who isn't.

If stupid was a crime, people like this “foreign policy adviser” would be on death row awaiting his date with the needle.

It leaves me shaking my head in stunned bewilderment how anyone can be so absolutely deluded and so utterly disconnected from reality. A goldfish has a longer memory span these people. It makes me wonder how anyone can makes statements like this with a straight face.

Samantha is among the elite of the Obamistas in seeking ever yet lower and baser positions to take.

She's up to her armpits in a War For Oil and she thinks it wasn't worth stopping Saddam Hussein's murders.

Oh, Geesh, “Tarnished by the Iraq War?”

At best, Obama did the exact same as Bush. But all you Leftists hate Bush so we can’t have that.

At worst, you didn’t even get Congressional buy in, a sinlge vote, nor 18 UN resolutions, a ceasefire, and 27 distinct coalition allies.

So, someday, God willing, we’llget to applaud a Republican president, who saved our honor that was TARNISHED BY THE LIBYAN WAR!

Any moron who actually believes that Libya and Egypt have anything to do with democracy might want to lay off the recreational drugs for a while and try to get a grip.

Agreed! These “freedom fighters” are Al-Qaeds types, NOT 1776-style Massachusetts Minutemen! Screwballs are running the country now... 2012 is our last chance, IMO!!!

I think it was either John Belushi or Tim Matheson in ‘Animal House’ that summed up Power’s statements -
“BLOWJOB” - “SNOWJOB” - as crazy as her commie husband.

Ordinary people just talk about rights. But people who talk on C-span from book stores on weekends talk about “Human Rights “. I think I know what a Right is, and that animals don’t have the same Rights, so what’s a Human Right? Everyone in the book store is nodding like it’s self explanatory, so I just accept the fact that C-Span’s out of my league.

But here’s article this lady with a name like “Samantha” talking about “Human Rights” and its on on Free Republic! Now I ‘m really frustrated and decide that I can’t be that dumb, so I read on. But again all I could find were assertions like “The words ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights’ have come to acquire meaning and content that Barack Obama and his administration provided”.

Finally I start Googling and find the “Al-Gaddafi International Prize for Human Rights”, which is awarded to one of the “international personalities, bodies or organizations that have distinctively contributed to rendering an outstanding human service and has achieved great actions in defending human rights, protecting the causes of freedom and supporting peace everywhere in the world”.

I’m still confused. Can somebody tell me what F*** a Human Right is?
