Obama: Measure students with more than tests

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said Monday that students should take fewer standardized tests and school performance should be measured in other ways than just exam results. Too much testing makes education boring for children, he said.

Latino students make up one in five of all students in prekindergarten through high school in the U.S. but lag far behind whites in educational attainment, with less than one in three graduating from high school, according to federal Education Department figures. Obama emphasized to his largely Hispanic audience the importance of staying in school and he noted that more and more jobs will require advanced degrees.
Obama also made a plug Monday for the use of technology in classrooms, revealing that he himself has an iPad.
He turned back a plea from one questioner to grant a special protected status to students who are in the country illegally in order to prevent them from getting deported. Obama said it wouldn't be appropriate because that status has traditionally been reserved for immigrants fleeing persecution or disaster.
The president did pledge to keep working to pass the Dream Act, which would give illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children a chance to gain legal status if they enroll in college or the military. The legislation passed the House but failed in the Senate in December; it now faces even longer odds in Congress with the House controlled by Republicans.

Licking the scrotum of change? My apologies......
Yes, dreams about getting laid, getting high and playing mid-night basket ball that would be holders people.
“We must take race, gender, LGBTI status, disability, party affiliation, union household status, parent’s firearm ownership, economic & social status and approved religions into account on test scores.”
WTF!
Performance *is* already measured in ways other than exam results. These other approaches often introduce enormous potential for bias and capriciousness--unlike properly designed standardized tests.
Which is why libs love the alternatives. PC outcomes can be readily produced.
This sounds like that twaddle that surfaced some years ago about “alternate” methods of testing. It spawned stories of kids building things with Lego instead of taking the SAT or some such. It’s supposed to provide a measure for kids who somehow didn’t get anything out of their schooling, but realistically, as noted upthread, it only allows for unqualified promotion. This will result in a great many kids who have no business going on to higher education being dumped into colleges and universities, where they will have to be socially promoted in order to graduate. The end result will be a greater stratification of the society, as waves of “frauducated” people move into adulthood completely unprepared for the Real World, and have to compete with, frankly, smarter people. They will fail, and become an ever-growing entitled/dependent class, unable to work in complex careers and unwilling to take less-demanding jobs which they will view as “below them”.
What about vouchers?
Hmmm, like party/idealogical loyalty?
>> revealing that he himself has an iPad.
And two teleprompters.
“he himself”

Which makes it asinine to suggest that they reduce testing or exams. He is an absolute IDIOT!
Yes.
What would be wrong with the “old fashioned” way of testing a student's knowledge of a subject at given intervals during the school year? Yes, it may have created a little stress, but passing a history, math, etc test was a great motivation to learn. So I sure don't agree with his “test every couple of years” methodology.
His equating his ownership of an Ipad with technology is junk.
The rest of the article dealing with illegal immigration...well it's to late for me to get out my soapbox. It was just his lame attempt to pander anyway.
Want kids to stay in school? Take them on a quick trip through the hood. Then take them on a field trip to the nearest prison? Take them on a tour of some of the grungy factories. Ask them if they want do that type of work for 40 years?
Thank you for your non-input.:)

Been there done that. It didn’t work. Have you actually practiced what you preach?
Well, drat, my non-input posted twice.
Not nearly as illustative as your post #2. :)
Oh brilliant!
Tests take time to grade. A much quicker solution would be to focus more on Michelle’s childhood obesity campaign. An entire class could be weighed in mere minutes!
Sorry little Sarah, 74 pounds gives you a C. C is for chubby cheeks. Next!
