Arriving as Pregnant Tourists, Leaving With American Babies
New York Times ^ | March 28, 2011 | JENNIFER MEDINA

SAN GABRIEL, Calif. — The building inspectors and police officers walked into the small row of connected town houses here knowing something was amiss. Neighbors had complained about noise and a lot of pregnant women coming and going. And when they went into a kitchen they saw a row of clear bassinets holding several infants, with a woman acting as a nurse hovering over them.

For months, officials say, the house was home to “maternity tourists,” in this case, women from China who had paid tens of thousands of dollars to deliver their babies in the United States, making the infants automatic American citizens. Officials shut down the home, sending the 10 mothers who had been living there with their babies to nearby motels.

“These were not women living in squalor — it was a well taken care of place and clean, but there were a lot of women and babies,” said Clayton Anderson, a city inspector who shut down the house on March 9. “I have never seen anything like this before. We really couldn’t determine the exact number of people living there.”

For the last year, the debate over birthright citizenship has raged across the country, with some political leaders calling for an end to the 14th Amendment, which gives automatic citizenship to any baby born in the United States. Much of the debate has focused on immigrants entering illegally from poor countries in Latin America. But in this case the women were not only relatively wealthy, but also here legally on tourist visas. Most of them, officials say, have already returned to China with their American babies.

Immigration experts say it is impossible to know precisely how widespread “maternity tourism” is.

If this maternity tourism is wrong, as the article implies, why is it ok (according to the NYT) when illegal aliens from Mexico do it?

Since more than half of the Mathematics PhD degrees awarded by American universities go to Chinese scholars -- I don't think those kids will be coming back here to go on welfare.

Real "immigration reform" would throw open the doors to folks of talent, ambition, and education. Chinese. Turks. White Europeans. (Disclosure: my grandparents were Ukrainian immigrants ... )

I agree - BUT - they still need to be vetted so we get AMERICANS and not people who still think they’re in the Old Country.

Plus, Turks? Do we really need more Muzzies?

Just think, according to the 14th Amendment, no such right ever existed. Only in the new times, when up is down left is right, wrong is right, right side up, isn’t anymore, and the courts are so far from right they are left, has this activity suddenly become a right.

I’ve heard of this with Indian women too. Plus, there are “pregnancy clinics” where they try to get a male baby started, important in many parts of the world for money and inheritance.

Gee, what happens in the USA when one of these women gets a girl instead? What services, do you think, they can get here and not “at home”?

t is nice to see that there are SOME people who still value US Citizenship, on the bright side.

S Korea has mandatory military service for all males. for decades korean women have been going to Hawaii or the West Coast to give birth, just in case their male kids want to avoid the draft.

At one point, the Chinese were denied entrance for this very reason.

The "wrong" here was operating a hotel without a license. The operation was afoul of business licensing and zoning sorts of regulations. As far as the US government is concerned, there is NOTHING wrong with maternity tourism. It's a good way to create future presidents.

Maternity tourism is a Constitutionally accepted form of obtaining citizenship, per the Supreme Court Decision Kim Wong Ark around 1900.

In that decision, the Court ruled that the child of foreign parents here on visa was a US Citizen because he met both tests of the 14th Amendment: he was born on US soil to parents legally subject to American jurisdiction.

IF our government allows and/or encourages the issuance of visas to pregnant women for the purpose of birth tourism (and it does), then those children meet both tests of the 14th amendment. The fault here lies with the government for issuing visas when it knows the purpose is to give birth here.

Hint: anchor babies, because they are not invited to be here - subjected to jurisdiction - do not meet both tests of the 14th.

Wrong; not citizens, just interlopers. It’s time to stop the misinterpretation of the 14th amendment so that these trespassers can no longer game the system.

Send them home. Without their U.S. welfare payment.

Savage mentioned this story a few days ago. His comment was “How can a nation survive such an insane immigration policy? Answer, it can’t.”

Because these are wealthy, intelligent and well educated people. If they do come back here, kids and/or parents, the odds are pretty slim that they are going to go on welfare or otherwise be a drain on society.
If the parents have it together enough to give the kid an option like this I think the odds are pretty good that the child is going to get full attention of Tiger Mother and be one educated and motivated competitor the next time they show up on our shores.

The Swiss have been coming here for decades as well.

It is decided in the 6th grade whether a child is qualified to attend college or not. So citizenship opens an option to get kids into American universities more easily along with ability to work in the US.

When they have a Bachelor’s, they can go back to Switzerland and there is not much problem getting accepted into the Swiss universities for their Master’s degree or go directly into the work force.

That Amendment should’ve had a sunset clause. Liberals are destroying the country today with something that was only meant for freed slaves and their children after the Civil War.

Ummm, in a rational world, they would not fall under “Subject to the jurisdiction thereof...” so their children would not be citizens.

But it’s not a rational world anymore, is it?
