The cash-strapped MTA may soon put welfare recipients to work scrubbing and cleaning the subways.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority wants to revive its participation in the city's Work Experience Program - which makes the unemployed toil for their benefit checks.

"This is a program that has a proven track record of doing three things: providing low-cost cleaning help for the subway; providing job training to people who need it, and leading directly to full-time employment for many of the people who participate in the program," MTA spokesman Jeremy Soffin said.

Why is this not done everywhere, automatically? Oh yeah, unions. Nevermind.

This is so common sense that like Saluki says why is this not done everywhere
The fact that this is being looked at in a heavily union state makes it all the sweeter

Is there a site which provides the amount of unemployment benefits paid state by state?

Will the recipients demand free health care and union representation along with paid time off for personal days and holidays?

Soon there will be demonstrations, parades and riots condemning the holding in SLAVERY, in gross violation of the US Consititution, of the poor, downtrodden, and victims of American nastiness.
To actually require an American to labor, toil, work for his tax consuming income is enough to make one......CHEER.

The liberals think it’s demeaning to the poor to compel able bodied people to do any sort of work in exchange for their benefits.

The liberals also think it’s bad to send women who have children out to work, because what about babysitting issues, etc. But this applies only to women on public assistance. Otherwise, liberals want women to go to work but it has to be a career, not just a job, so that the woman is fulfilled, etc. outside the home. But in the case of poor women, liberals think they should be at home always with their children.

Most of the new “workers” will experience “back problems” or “emotional distress” of some sort and go on disability for the rest of their disengaged lives. Just how does that save money?

And what about union members who are currently laid off? Make them work, for unemployment level wages?

Riots in the streets!

“and leading directly to full-time employment for many of the people who participate in the program,” MTA spokesman Jeremy Soffin said.”

Ah let’s increase our union membership with people who won’t have a choice.

Now I get it

mixed feelings about this. unemployment is funded, at least partially. I’d rather see it done for welfare recipients. at the very least, the first 12 weeks or so of unemployment should be exempted.

Yes, able-bodied people on welfare need to earn their checks somehow.

No, the unemployed should spend their time loafing around, not scrubbing trains.
4%

Huh? I wasn’t paying attention to what the gubmint does with my money.

Exactly. That’s probably why they hooked them with the local govt...to eventually entice these losers into eventual membership.
