It may get me into trouble, but I would like to think that so long as we are asking Him for guidance and strength, that to some extent, He is counting on us to serve His will down here, hopeful look.

Right, I more-a-less agree. You can’t just ask God for help; you have to be sincere, have faith, truly believe and actually make a concerted effort to be helped. One cannot passively sit by and wait to be disappointed by God’s apparent inactivity on their behalf. Like you said - live well and be well, live poorly and wallow (again, more-a-less).
