Why Pot Smokers Are Paranoid
TIME ^ | 6 April, 2011 | Maia Szalavitz

Paranoia is one of the most unpleasant "side effects" of marijuana. It's also a key experience shared by marijuana smokers and people with schizophrenia. But exactly how does smoking a joint cause the feeling that dark forces are conspiring to do you wrong?

New research in rats may help explain the source of this distress. The study, led by Steven Laviolette at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, involved training rats to fear the scent of either almond or peppermint. The scents were delivered to rats in a cage either with black-and-white striped walls or with black polka dots on a gray background. (The rats were not pre-tested for their taste in interior design.) One scent was accompanied by an electric shock to the rodents' feet, while the other scent was not.

At the same time, researchers experimented with the activity of the CB1 receptors in a certain region of the rats' brains. These cannabinoid receptors are activated by the main psychoactive component of marijuana, THC. In some rats, the scientists blocked CB1-receptor activity; in others, they used a marijuana-like drug to enhance it.

My dad is in a VA hospital with Alzheimers. My sis wrote today that when she came to visit, he was standing by the door, ready to go to his boyhood home where his mom, sis and brother were waiting for him. My grandmother, et al, are long dead! He's 88, and I'm 63.

I'd like to get admitted into those studies!!!!!!!!!!! At least he's happy...

No one is “drunk”, but are you trying to tell me nobody is feeling any sort of intoxication at all? Nobody’s BAC levels have increased?

“Drunk” and “stoned” are fairly meaningless terms. With both drugs there are varying degrees of intoxication that are widely apart from each other. I know people who will take 1-2 hits of decent pot and experience the intoxication of the equivalent of a couple beers or glasses of wine.

Lately I haven’t seen people just sit in a circle and pass around pot until the cows come home. I saw that in high school and college but those days are long past. In my adult life the pot smokers I see smoke an amount they are comfortable with and either socialize or play some sort of game or do a menial house project or whatever. Heck, most of the pot smoking adults I know own vaporizers because they don’t even want the harmful effects of the smoke.

Sounds as if you all have more good than bad.

My Family is from WV but Pops never would admit to it ☺

I can certainly see a stoner getting too fascinated fiddling with the audio controls and piling into a stopped car in front of him.

Yep. Drunks and sober people never do that.

Are you really advocating driving under the influence here? I was in the car, he was stoned and fixated upon the stereo to the point that he didn’t even come out of his stoned reverie when I was yelling for him to stop, sitting right beside him. My own stupidity for getting into the car in the first place, I guess, but we’r all young and stupid at some point.

Sounds like they just wanted an excuse to torture rats.

They ought to spark a fat one and chill. ;^)

You sound like a drug-first libertarian. A number of pot articles were recommended to me and I thought they would be of interest to drug-free readers. Turns out I was right.

I like science. Perhaps you should question potheads smashing up free-market businesses and drug-driving. If you’re committed to crime-free liberty that is.

And where did you study neuroscience sir? Pot and paranoia are close friends. It explains so much really.

“Pot is pretty inane stuff.Alcohol does far more damage. People get insane on alcohol.”

Great red herring there. Let’s not talk about the dangers associated with pot? Even if I did believe the above spin, why would two wrongs make a right? This is neuroscience – and we need to deal with it.

Yes the drug-first libertarian is obsessed with defending pot smokers, as opposed to paying for their healthcare bills. It is selective liberty.

“Hmmmm, I have known potheads to be a lot of things, but paranoid is not one of them.”

Unfortunately, neuroscience isn’t based around your interpretation of how your friendship circle operates. Speak to a neuroscientist and get back to me.

I disagree with most behavior that is rooted in obsession.
But Honestly, why is pot worst that ***** or beer or ciggies, or race cars?

Our wives run up and down the highway taking jimmy and suzy to soccer practice at 75 mph

Why should one be banned and the other ballyhooed?

My biggest problem with pot is that it makes folks complacent.
They tend to tow the line, get in a groove.

I see people do way more destructive things on a hourly basis

We should prolly just tax it. That would Make it respectable

Yeah – that’s a good excuse. Pot heads are only paranoid because of laws. But they’re also paranoid in Holland. I’ll tell that to the woman who was run over by a pothead because he thought she was an alien.
