Tax Battle Could Shut Down Millstone
NBC Connecticut ^

Waterford is Connecticut's home of nuclear power. The town relies on the two reactors at Millstone for jobs and tax revenue.

"I like Millstone, get power from it, and I have no problem with 'em," said Steve Byrne of Waterford.

Still, after the havoc in Japan two state legislators wanted to give townspeople a forum to ask questions about safety at Millstone with officials of the plant's operator, Dominion.

"I think you have to understand that in our community, in Waterford, we've hosted the power plant of course for decades and are very used to conversations like this," said Rep. Betsy Ritter.

There is a threat to Millstone, though, that Ritter thinks will come up at the forum. She tried to stop the legislature's energy committee from approving a tax on power generation, a tax Dominion says would force it to shut down Millstone.

State Senator Andrea Stillman of Waterford, said, "To tax one entity to that degree of $330 million a year, I think, is outrageous."

So let me get this straight, people who live near Millstone don't mind it and consider it safe, but the "representatives" want to tax it enough to make Dominion want to shut it down. Way to go! Then what?

We already pay some of the highest electric rates here in CT and our elected officials what to shut down enough generating capacity for a half a million homes.

It may not make sense to you or me, but I bet somebody would stand to make a lot of money if the plan goes through.

With a nuke plant? Fun to watch from a safe distance, but...
