Yes. In college Chem classes we used to put dimes in mercury to watch it adhere to them and make them shiny. I asked my Pathologist (a couple of decades ago) if I might suffer any harm from that some day. He said ‘Yeah. YOU'RE GOING TO DIE!’ And then he laughed. I'm still here. But those CFL bulbs have mercury in them and they are considered hazardous waste if they break. Another genius idea from the Nanny Statists.

IIRC, the mercuty in the CFL’s is actually a powder (compound) of some sort, meaning it can get everywhere if you break one of the things. The mercury you fiddled with was a liquid — easier to control
