El Monte Man Arrested For Creating Phony Army Unit, Recruiting Chinese Nationals

A Chinese national was arrested Tuesday for allegedly creating a phony U.S. Army unit and recruiting other Chinese nationals by telling them it was a path to U.S. citizenship.

Yupeng Deng, also known as David Deng, was taken into custody by agents from the FBI and the U.S. Department of Defense and jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the 51-year-old El Monte resident is facing 14 felony counts, including obtaining money, labor or property by false pretenses, deceptive document crime and an unrelated count of possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct.

Deng allegedly created a phony U.S. military unit called the U.S. Army/Military Special Forces Reserve unit in 2008, gave himself the title of “Supreme Commander” and recruited more than 100 Chinese nationals, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

He allegedly charged initiation fees ranging from $300 to $450 per year to each recruit, with renewal fees set at $120 annually.

Recruits could increase their rank in the unit by making cash donations to Deng.

The recruits were provided with phony U.S. Army uniforms, fake documents and fraudulent military ID cards and directed to report to Deng’s Temple City office for military training and indoctrination, the documents alleged.

The recruits marched in a parade in Monterey Park and took a tour of the USS Midway museum in San Diego while dressed in uniform, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

If he'd given them the correct uniforms, he might have gotten away with it.

I’ll say this much — they know how to form their berets.

Is this really against the law?

I think a Foreign Legion is a tremendous idea. Chinese pay to get in, Mexican illegal aliens are drafted in.

You go for it, Deng baby!

Ben, speaking of berets, I am still looking for the jerk who thought this weird headgear is somehow suitable to the American skull. Apparently the American Beret comes in one size only: Too Small.

Are you making fun of the Brits again? And the South Africans? And the French?

[We won't even mention the Israelis.]

It works pretty good for tank crews. You can stuff it inside a CVC helmet or a jacket/plate carrier pocket, and wipe off your goggles with it.

And black is just the right colour, as well as being traditional for treadheads.

Nobody in particular, there are plenty of examples of poorly formed berets in the news from time to time. Usually in less developed locales.

Point is, forming the beret is a pain in the ass and it is a ridiculous item of military headgear to start with.

Archy, berets is for girls as part of a convent school uniform. They are also useful for filtering hydraulic fluid.

What the hell is wrong with a bloody hat, a watch cap, a bloody balaclava .... anything but this thing that makes you want to see the guy carrying a loaf of French bread, not a weapon.

And I repeat, they all look too small and you need to have a shaved head or you look like Che Guevara.

"Is this really against the law?"

Good question. All he did was brought in illegals, provided them with fake papers, armed them and made them pay membership dues. I don't see how he did anything different than MS-13, the Asian Boyz, the Russian Mafia, or any of a host of other gangs.

Precisely.

And he gave them nice uniforms, a bit of training, esprit de corps, self-esteem, etc. It's a friggin' militia, any public-spirited American has the right to raise and equip one. How the hell did we fight the Civil War, the Revolution? Privately funded units, that's how!

Way to go Deng! Turn'em over to the governor, get out of jail free.
