Congrats on coming home! Thanks for your years of service and best wishes for a safe journey.

If you aren’t already familiar with it I’d like to recommend the TV series Firefly and its movie sequel Serenity on Netflix. It’s available either on disc or streaming. It was canceled after only a year but it’s still some of the best stuff that’s been on TV.

I hear Julianne Moore is going to try resurrect and insert her “Boogie Nights” character into the movie. Gotta give the lefties a little porn so they can relate ya know.

Last night I live streamed from Netflix, the German serial killer movie, “Antibodies.” Wife did not like it at all, but got to admit, is had me on the edge of my seat more that once.

At Netflix, I have gravitated more and more to foreign movies, more realistic and one heck of a lot less corny. I have found some outstanding Spanish language (with English subtitles) drama and thriller movies.

Thanks, TH, Firefly and Serenity have been happily sitting on my DVD shelf, when not in player for several years now. It was the source for me finding things like Wonderwall, Pushing Daisies and Brisco County. Gotta consider that seminal, yes?

I have been particularly seeking out European movies and have seen a number of good Spanish ones, mainly by Almovodar (or is it Almodovar? oh well...) But my main find has been Chinese cinema, which turns out to be excellent and can be savagely critical of the communist overlords.

And of course, I have been hip deep in Japanese films, partciularly Kurosawa, but also Ozu and Mizoguchi.

re: Wonderwall, Pushing Daisies and Brisco County. Gotta consider that seminal, yes?

Indeed. Brisco County is also one of the prizes of my collection. I liked Pushing Daisies and need to pick up a copy, but missed Wonderall. I’ll have to check that out.

It’s ironic that so many of these programs that get canceled after only one season can pack more good writing, plot, character development and sheer entertainment into that short run than many of those so-called “hit” series that drag on for years... /g

Yes, today’s comic talent is unbelievably bad. Probably because they come up through the comedy clubs rather than the hardscrabble days of vaudeville. I just finished reading Harpo Marx’s entertaining (and well-respected!) autobiography “Harpo Speaks” and was amazed at the 20 years the brothers played and lived in filthy theatres and filthy boardinghouses before they hit the big time.

I suggest buying the newly released dvds of “Bilko” and “Car 54 Where Are You?” to see some brilliant comic acting.

Oy! You just admitted you buy bootleg dvds. You’re in trouble now, kid. While the FBI turns a blind eye to Islamic terrorists, they are quick to arrest anyone with a bootleg movie. Democrat presidents like Obambi and Clinton are totally corralled by Hollywood’s obsession with tracking down every bootleg dvd that deprives them of a penny.

You’ve just reminded me of how untalented that chick is who does Hillary Clinton. She never got Hillary’s shrill, Chicago accent and even the famous cackle was off-base.

LOL - then they'd best hurry to Baghdad and get busy. They've got their work cut out for 'em.

Oh...and then there are the other bases all over Iraq.

Then, they can start on Afghanistan. ;-)

Maybe that’s how we got involved in all these wars - they were trying to find all those bootleg salesmen, lol!

Well, I don’t think all comedic talent is bad, its just many of the ones who get tapped for TV do not seem to be among the best.

This wasn’t always the case.

Your examples of the Marx Bros is a good one, but you don’t have to go back that far really.

Bill Cosby for example is a comedic genious, and rarely ever worked blue.

To many of the comedians that get tapped for the “big time”, IE TV today I really think are mediocre at best. They aren’t the stars of their craft IMHO.

You may be right that the comedy club circuit may be part of the problem, its always easy to go for the cheap dirty joke, or the shock value punchline. True comic genious stands up to the test of time, and most that are out there today in terms of spotlight won’t be remembered.

I would say of the people I consider comedians on TV, the top of his class today, for better of worse is probably John Stewart. I don’t share much with him in terms of his political view points, but he is a truely great comedian.

Tosh is a 1 trick pony, who’s already passed his prime, which was a given, given the model he’s using.. take videos from the internet that are funny and poke fun at them... and toss in some hack kneed same punchline gay jokes in between. Problem with this is, there are only so many truly funny videos... Once you work through the backlog that existed before you had your show.. the quality goes down, and that’s exactly what has happened to his show already. His standup is ok, but nothing spectacular.

I don’t know, I am not saying all comedians are bad, but it just seems that the ones that get tapped for sit coms tend to be mediocre at best.

I agree with you about Bill Cosby but let’s face it, he is now quite elderly - I mean “old school.” I really love his work in black inner cities - he’s very tough them.

I disagree with you about Jon Stewart; politics aside, I find his incredible mugging and smug manner offputting.
