'Patriotic Millionaires' Ask to Be Taxed More
National Journal ^ | 04/13/2011 | Ben Terris

If President Obama's deficit-reduction speech today includes a call to end the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, there will surely be pushback; Republicans have already begun a preemptive attack on raising taxes. One group of millionaires, however, is saying that they are more than willing to pay more for the good of their country.

The “Patriotic Millionaires” penned a letter to Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and House Speaker John Boehner, urging them to “increase taxes on incomes over $1,000,000.”

The Millionaires—a group that includes producer and director Doug Liman, actress Edie Falco, the founder of Ask.com, and top Google engineers—wrote that the United States has helped them succeed financially, and they are willing to help the country do the same.

“Our country has been good to us. It provided a foundation through which we could succeed,” the group wrote. “Now, we want to do our part to keep that foundation strong so that others can succeed as we have.”

According to Alison Goldberg of the group Wealth for the Common Good, raising tax rates on millionaires could raise $60 billion to $80 billion a year in revenue.

"This small monetary sacrifice is both an ethical and patriotic decision, made in the hopes of allowing the United States of America to continue to be a leader economically, politically, and morally," said Garrett Gruener, founder of Ask.com.

But while these millionaires may be willing to pay more taxes, that doesn’t mean everyone in the country necessarily thinks it’s a good idea.

“I am not in favor of raising taxes right now, period,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Wednesday on MSNBC. “The question is raising revenues.... And how are you going raise revenues? Are you just going to raise taxes through a magic wand

How about patriotic politicians who will spend money responsibly and not squander trillions and try to confiscate more from hard working Americans?

If they really feel patriotic, they should put their money into creating jobs for non-millionaires. Doing something that will grow government will only further destroy this country.

If you think government does more with your money than you can to help the economy, create jobs, put food on people’s plates, then sure, vote to raise taxes.

But you fail at life. You are a MORON.

Exactly. Why don’t these jerks just write a check and give their entire net worth to the U.S. Treasury? Who is stopping them from giving more?

By the way, I never heard of any of the morons on this list. I wonder how many of them put their money in tax-free municipal bonds and don’t pay taxes in the first place.

Well for one, why isn’t Michael Moore on their list?

Go ahead pay more taxes. It's just going down the toilet... and paying for the interest on our debt. You'll see nothing for your grand gesture of paying a few more dollars to fund an out of control government.

The pity and the blindness is... is that our children and grandchildren will suffer.

It’s simpler than that: Just demand that they make their tax returns public.

If they have taken ANY deductions or bypassed “income tax” by the usual methods then they are full of it.

Idiots. If they want to help with their wealth, they should find a philanthropic outlet. They have no business laying their hands on the private property of others who may not be inclined to "share" their wealth. Others may actually have a significant call on their wealth to keep people employed.

Continuing to feed a beast that has an insatiable appetite, and has grown beyond all the boundaries defined in the US Constitution is hardly "patriotic".

Its Patriotic to insist that the beast goes a on a severe diet.
And yes, it is true that we have been Blessed in this Country beyond all measure, and it has produced an environment that is conducive to innovation and achievement - but that has been the outcome gained from a limited government - not the monstrosity that exists today. Why has our economy stagnated? Why have companies had to flee off-shore? To a large degree this has been due to this enormous government which these "patriots" insist that we feed.

I think Congress could easily grant them their wish by simply enacting tax legislation specifically for those mentioned in their letter.

I figure that an annual tax rate of 150% would be just right, with the caveat that should any of the aforementioned try to move their money or the person out of the US, all of their monies are forfeit... as well as all future earnings.

In other words, they become an indentured servant to the US.

I'm sure that they'd quickly become so blissed out in ecstasy over their change to finally pay ‘more’.

I don’t give a rat’s behind what these scumbags do with their money. How hard could it be for these scumbags to google an address for the US Treasury so they know where to send their checks?

I’m not sure I understand why they are “asking” to be taxed more when all they have to do is...
Oh wait...!
Are they really saying that what they want is for government to put a gun to OTHER PEOPLE’S heads?
Well, if that’s the case then they can have a happy heart attack and drop dead.

Funny how the rich Hollywood limo liberals are so generous with your money, but are loathe to part with their own.

Or at least say "thank you".
Just once the parasites could say "thank you" to the taxpayers.

Idiots ... you are at liberty to send a check AT ANY TIME to the US TREASURY, if you believe you are not being taxed enough. If that’s too hard for you to understand, you can just as easily forgo any taxable deductions, and that would increase your taxes as well.

Because you are too STUPID to figure this out... Don’t SCREW the rest of us!!!
