Slavery at the Naval War College: Suspect Nabbed Leaving US

One of the problems of Empire is that it always starts out as a way to dissipate the Imperial power's values abroad. And, in fact, the history shows that at least some of those values and customs are absorbed by conquered states. But the converse is true, too. The values and customs of those conquered become absorbed by the Imperial power. So, they play cricket in Pakistan. But some public pools are now gender segregated in London. I'd like to think, generally speaking, that those officers from abroad brought to the United States for military training return home better off and bring some of our values back. To some extent the refusal of the Egyptian military to fire on their own people probably reflects the long standing military-to-military relationship between our two countries.

But from time to time it shouldn't surprise us that the values antithetical to Western liberalism would be brought here by those coming from abroad. Case in point, the Arabian Peninsula where slavery and working conditions of very much like slavery are not uncommon. And when they come here, some times they bring with them their custom of near forced servitude:

"The United Arab Emirates military officer accused of forcing his Filipino servant to work unpaid caring for his five children and cleaning his house in East Greenwich while he studied at the Naval War College was arrested late Monday at Kennedy Airport in New York aboard a direct flight back to his country....

"Al-Ali, who is attending a year-long program at the War College, pleaded not guilty last week to human trafficking. Authorities say he persuaded the 38-year-old woman to come to the United States and forced her to work seven days a week, until midnight, without pay, at the house he rents at 15 Downing St. in East Greenwich. He is also charged with providing ICE agents with false documents indicating he paid her $19,000."

All our colorful diversity, etc., + Izlam = slavery and document fraud.
