Late Tuesday night the Hudson Board of Education meted out punishment for teachers who called in sick in protest against Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill, causing school to be closed on Feb. 18.
Board president Barb VanLoenen read a resolution that included several categories ranging from one-day unpaid suspensions up to 15 days. All categories included letters of reprimand and warning in the teachers’ personnel files. The suspensions went up based on actions a teacher was believed to have taken. The longer suspensions were for teachers who encouraged colleagues to call in sick and who conducted or discussed union business or talked to the media on district property.

Good! I was wondering if any school districts were going to take action on their “sick” teachers.
What crap. If any of us pulled the same thing we’d be lucky if the only penalty was an unpaid vacation.

This is step one. I have it on good authority that there are smart people advising local school boards on how to make teachers(the bad ones) lives miserable by using their own rules. Board members are usually lay-people who thought it would be neat to run for local school boards. They are not skilled at managing people, projects, and negotiations as a generalization. That’s how the teachers got this far in the first place.
Termination is what is called for here.
Set the tone of bargaining for future negotiations now.

I know, easier said than done...
This is a very good point. It is always hard for members of any board (even a corporate board) to realize that they are not just there for decorative purposes and that they actually have major responsibilities and a (hard) job to do.
That is what would happen in any real job if you lied to your employer and didn't show up for work when you were needed.
There have become two kinds of jobs in America, real jobs where the employee has performance goals and real responsibility and can be let go if he doesn't perform and phony “jobs” where workers have no responsibility or performance goals and can show up or not show up whenever they please and can never get fired.
You don’t think those teachers will take it quietly, right?
They will triple their effort at more brainwashing the innocent. Their students will be the subject of the life lesson learning experience.
These teachers will use their letters of reprimand as a trophy if they try to get a teaching job somewhere else someday. The union will think the letter is an honor.
Suspensions? Hell. FIRE them!

Now that’s a good Board of Education! So-called teachers need to protest on their OWN time and abortion’s need to be paid for on the person’s OWN dime.
My local school district (Mequon-Thiensville) employs 300 teachers. There are 1000 applications on file of qualified teachers who would like to replace them. MT could fire the whole lot of them and never miss a day of school. Needless to say, our teachers did not go out on strike. But, they did wear black arm bands and red shirts, so we know where their sentiments lie. I hope Hudson sticks to their guns and that other districts follow.

Make them write 20 page essays to their students on why, what they did was wrong.
