Centenarian Kills Self in New Evacuation Area

Fukushima, April 14 (Jiji Press)--A 102-year-old man has killed himself in the Fukushima Prefecture village of Iitate, which will become an evacuation area due to radioactive materials leaking from the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, it was learned Thursday.

Before the suicide, the oldest resident of the community discussed evacuation plans with his family, municipal officials said, adding that they suspect the man was depressed at the idea that he would have to leave his place.

The man was confirmed dead on Tuesday, the day after the central government announced a plan to newly designate Iitate and some other municipalities as areas which residents are required to evacuate.

The Iitate government has given up growing any plant this season because relatively large amounts of radioactive materials from the plant have been accumulated there.

At 102 I kind of have a hard time condemning him for his decision.

I have long observed that moving is traumatic to the elderly.

Think of all that man witnessed in his life. He survived World War II. He saw Japan as a completely devastated wreckage grow to world industrial powerhouse. After all of that he kills himself.

Very sad.
History does not look kindly upon refugees.
And I’m quite sure that 102 year-old refugees fair even worse.

One would think there would be a way others could help these people.

I've heard that cruise ships like that throw away more food in a day than most residents of Port-au-Prince see in a year.

On a ship that size, more like one hour.
