Particularly since Germany is half Catholic. So my kraut friends tell me.

That was my understanding also. At the time of the Reformation, when Germany was the 'Holy Roman Empire', roughly half the states were Roman Catholic, and half were Protestant. I wouldn't be surprised if that's pretty much the make up today (unless the States that were incorporated into Communist East Germany are now mostly atheistic).
