Grant Kruger was convicted of helping steal $13 million in military equipment from the federal government. He was hired by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development in 2008. Kruger is an unemployment insurance auditor, which means he has access to personal financial information like social security numbers, credit reports, income taxes and phone numbers for thousands of Minnesotans. Kruger also has access to sensitive corporate financial records.

On Monday, Governor Pawlenty signed into law the “Ban the Box” bill, which prevents public employers from inquiring about an individual’s criminal record on job applications. The bill was supported unanimously by both Republicans and Democrats and passage of this legislation makes Minnesota the first state to adopt a statewide “Ban the Box” law. Mark Haase, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy for the Council on Crime and Justice, tells KFAI’s Catherine Willman how this legislation can help an individual with a criminal record.

The KSTP article doesn’t give me a sense of why the reporter is outraged. The affair is curious.
I knew Grant Kruger when he was head of the Military Vehicles and Arms Museum of Minnesota, back when I was involved in WWII re-enactments (I was a lowly German light-infantry Gefreiter carrying a Mauser) Had I the money at the time, this sort of thing was the only way Minnesota would allow one to possess a Thompson.)
