You’re right though, ten deaths from today’s tornadoes in North Carolina confirmed. Counties of Wake, Bladen, Lee, Cumberland and Johnston.

This is sad.

That is the view we saw only not from that high up. We were heading back from the coast today and heard the warnings on the radio. They said that there was a tornado on the ground in downtown Raleigh headed north.

We were headed west on 440 and about 8 miles from home and I begged my husband to stop. He said we were OK and could make it home just fine but once he saw the tornado to our south he changed his tune. That thing was HUGE!

We pulled off on Capital Blvd. and took cover in an ABC liquor store since it was a mostly brick bldg. Shortly after we got inside the store lost power and we heard and saw the storm pass. We hung out for about 20 min. because the rain was so intense.

After we got home we watched the weather reports and saw that a trailer park was destroyed near where we were, according to Google Maps it is only about 3000 ft. from our location.

No damage at our house in N Raleigh, power was working once we got near home. Still continuous news on and we feel very lucky, apparently there were some fatalities in Raleigh and this was the same storm that did much more damage in Sanford.

NC reporting storm deaths, adding to 17 killed
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_severe_weather

RALEIGH, N.C. – A brutal spring storm raged across North Carolina on Saturday, flattening businesses, flipping cars and destroying homes, leaving an unknown number of casualties from a system already blamed for killing 17 people in four states.

North Carolina officials said there were multiple fatalities and they were working to confirm the exact number. Urban search and rescue teams were in two counties looking for residents who might be trapped in damaged buildings.

Tornadoes, storms kill at least 20 in South

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) – Tornadoes tore into the Carolinas on Saturday afternoon as the death toll rose to 20 people from storms across the southern United States over the last three days.

A mechanic at a tire shop in Raleigh, North Carolina, said he took shelter in his truck while co-workers squeezed into an interior room when the storm hit on Saturday afternoon.

“It was one hell of a storm,” said Bryan Jackson. “I started to see the roof vibrate and then the roof separated and it was gone.”

Still listening to the scanner feed. When their tone gets quiet and somber I almost know what they’re dealing with.

Yeah, it’s bad. That number may go up some too; they have some reports of unconfirmed fatalities with no numbers attached to them yet.

Up in Bertie County south of Ahoskie first responders and volunteers are going door to door to check on residents. We’re lucky down in Wilson. We had a few homes destroyed out by Wiggins Mill, and a twister went through a business area doing some damage around the Forest Hills Rd / Tarboro St intersection. The CVS drugstore there took some serious damage. There have been some injuries, but so far it looks like we’ve escaped with property damage... no loss of lives.

The death toll in North Carolina alone now appears to be around 24, including at least 10 in Bertie County, a mostly rural county in northeastern NC, about midway between Raleigh and Norfolk.

If it was unclear, I was referring to no one dying in Wilson, where there were at least 2 separate tornado touchdowns.
