AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry has appealed to President Barack Obama to declare the state a major disaster area as wildfires strike or threaten all but two of the state's 254 counties.

A statement issued Sunday by Perry requested the aid in a letter dispatched Saturday afternoon. Perry's office says more than 7,800 fires across the states have charred more than 1.5 million acres - about 2,400 square miles - while burning 244 homes and threatening more than 8,500 others.

.."major disaster declaration" would make the state eligible for help in responding to and recovering from the emergency.

You’re welcome to come visit Texas and enjoy our hospitality.

We’re the same rednecks who took in tens of thousands of Katrina victims and got them back on their feet.

A lot of them like us so much, they’re staying here in Texas - the land of opportunity.

From the original article, “AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry has appealed to President Barack Obama to declare the state a major disaster area as wildfires strike or threaten all but two of the state’s 254 counties.

A statement issued Sunday by Perry requested the aid in a letter dispatched Saturday afternoon”

I did not tell Rick to do it, he did it on his own. I was just pointing out that to ask for help was weak.

(yesterday I heard on the radio that 0 is going to AL, ‘only 36 hours’ after the tornados...like he is really somebody special. SOB, POS is what he is.)

4-29 update:

s dry conditions and gusty winds whip up new wildfires in parched Texas, Gov. Rick Perry Thursday blasted the Obama Administration for failing to issue a disaster declaration for the state, widening the growing rift between the White House and the states rights advocate governor, 1200 WOAI news reports.

“You see hundreds of thousands of acres of Texas burning and you know that there will soon be emergency declarations, and we did that now a couple of weeks ago, but still no response from this administration,” Perry told 1200 WOAI’s Michael Board after addressing the Texas Emergency Management Conference in San Antonio.

“There is a point in time where you say, hey, what’s going on here,” Perry said. “You have to ask why are you taking care of Alabama and other states? I know our letter didn’t get lost in the mail.”

The White House says President Obama will visit Alabama, hard hit by tornadoes Wednesday, later today.

Perry requested a federal declaration of emergency for Texas on April 16, as wildfires began to rage across the entire state. So far, the request has not been answered, although several federal agencies, including the National Park Service, are supplying firefighters to the state’s effort.

No matter what a state or the state’s governor thinks about the azzhole in the WH. A president should always act with dignity and class. This POS has neither.

A class act the president isn’t.

He’s a vengeful, petty man with a chip on his shoulder for no reason.

He must be a real pain to live with.

It’s not just about dollars but the use of equipment sitting at Ft. Hood and other bases.

You do know that there are federal assets, think equipment on the bases that are sitting ready to be used but there are bureaucratic red tape crap in the way of using them. It’s not weak but the fracking procedure.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2011: Current Texas Wildfire Situation Crews making headway on Bastrop fire; victim ID'd as Austin city workerBASTROP — Bastrop wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of houses and thousands of acres continued to burn Wednesday, but firefighters say they are making progress battling the blaze.

Officials said Wednesday that they have contained 30 percent of the larger Bastrop fire, which has so far annihilated about 800 houses and 34,000 acres, according to the Texas Forest Service.

Rescuers have begun conducting house-by-house searches for potential fire victims, but so far, the death toll remains at two.

Authorities identified one of the two victims as Michael Troy Farr, a 48-year-old City of Austin employee who was found Tuesday at his home on Hudson Drive near Smithville. Farr, an electrician who had worked for the city since 2003, worked in the building services division.

[snip]

Meanwhile, federal support may soon be on its way.

President Barack Obama telephoned Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday afternoon to offer condolences about the wildfires and pledge federal help with firefighting and recovery, the White House said.

Obama reached Perry in California, where the governor was preparing for Wednesday night's Republican presidential debate. After hanging up, Obama directed officials to ensure that they are "making all resources available" to Texas, the U.S. Forest Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the press office said.

Though the Bastrop blaze remains largely uncontained, firefighters have had success managing other Central Texas fires, including those in Steiner Ranch, Spicewood and Leander.

Along with the search for additional victims in Bastrop, officials with FEMA began an assessment with local officials of the fire damage...............
