WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama will hold talks Tuesday with former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on US immigration reform, the White House said.
The meeting comes as legislative efforts to enact an overhaul stalled in the polarized US Congress, amid worries about violence along the US border with Mexico and concerns over stubbornly high US unemployment.
Obama "will meet with a broad group of business, law enforcement, faith, and leaders from across the political spectrum on the importance of fixing our nation's broken immigration system," said spokesman Nick Shapiro.
The president, who recently announced his 2012 reelection bid, aims "to meet our 21st century economic and national security needs so that America can win the future," said Shapiro.
Schwarnegger is a Republican; Bloomberg was a Republican but left the party ahead of the 2008 presidential elections, when it was rumored he might run as an independent.
Expected participants also included San Antonio, Texas Mayor Julian Castro, and Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, said Shapiro.
Obama had vowed during his 2008 run for the White House to pursue a comprehensive overhaul of US immigration, at a time when an estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants lived in the United States.
The effort -- which appealed to US Hispanics, a fast-growing population of US voters -- fell apart in the US Congress, and the president blamed his Republican foes.

They should package immigration reform together with unemployment benefits extension for life so that nobody is confused.
I look forward to seeing Arnold and Mike's House bill submitted for consideration by the representatives of the people. Oh, wait....THEY'RE NOT IN CONGRESS, ARE THEY?

Even California, which is in the deepest financial doo-doo of any state, could balance their budget simply by cutting off benefits to anyone who is not legally in the country.
The formula might be slightly more complicated for a state like Illinois which isn't quite so innundated with illegal aliens scooping up benefits which they didn't pay for and have no right to collect, but it would still get them most of the way there.
