Got an iPhone or 3G iPad? Apple is recording your moves
O'Reilly Radar ^ | April 20, 2011 | Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden

Posted on 04/20/2011 10:15:30 AM PDT by PanzerKardinal

Today at Where 2.0 Pete Warden and I will announce the discovery that your iPhone, and your 3G iPad, is regularly recording the position of your device into a hidden file. Ever since iOS 4 arrived, your device has been storing a long list of locations and time stamps. We're not sure why Apple is gathering this data, but it's clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations.

So are google and Android. Although you should have the option to turn off the geo tracking.

Remember the cell phone companies have always had this information, but you need a court order to get it.

But, this information is sitting right on your computer open to everyone.

And Apple hasn’t told anyone nor asked consent.

Big Brother needs to know where you are so that he can keep you safe. Google and Apple are more than happy to help.

I’m in agreement with you, which is why I don’t own an iPhone or an Android operating system phone. I also don’t think web pages should have the right to track where you go after leaving their website and I staunchly support “Don’t Track Me” legislation.

I just got a Kindle 3G last week. I couldn’t believe that thing gives free internet for life. No matter where I am (so far) I can tap into the internet from that thing. I’m no tech expert at all, don’t even have a cellphone, so is this the latest thing? No more servers you have to sign up for and pay? They just broadcast it like radio? I have no idea how any of this stuff works. I’m like Obama and the Presidency, question marks everywhere. I always thought to get internet you had to subscribe to a server like what I’m doing now with this computer, I pay extra with my cable bill for hi-speed internet which uses a cable.

Anybody ever use a location spoofer app?
It might come in handy just to throw some mis-information at Google and Apple..

It will not be long until robbers could purchase realtime information where are the owners of the house, yacht or vehicle they plan to rob.

You have a choice, either accept their ridicule in silence and keep them as "friends" or tell them of peril and if they got burned lose "friends" (people do not like be embarr-assed with their own stupidity)

Easy to do.

What’s funny is we’re supposed to be scared that Apple is “tracking” us. With the competition, pretty much any motivated nerd can do the same. Given the options, I’ll take my chances with Apple.

Apple now knows when you go to a store to look at a competitor’s product!
